A Coffee Lover’s Worst Morning: How Sickness Stole My Comfort Cup

For the coffee lovers in the house, you will agree with me that there is something comforting about getting yourself a warm cup of coffee when it is the first thought in the morning, especially when your body feels like it's falling apart. I remember one particular morning when I longed for that comfort, hoping it could somehow give me strength against the sickness that was creeping in.

Typhoid had its grip on me, though I hadn't realized it the previous day before. I had bought some sachets of Nescafe just in case, telling myself that a familiar taste would chase the sickness and make me feel stronger but I was wrong.

This was how it happened...

The next day when I woke up, everything about me changed, nothing was the same as the previous day, my body system was weaker, my tongue bitter and I lay shivering in bed, unable to even sit up. I managed to call my friend and when she came around to check on me, I pleaded with her to help me boil some water so I could take a sachet Nescafe and make a coffee, I thought I could manage but the outcome was a severe one.

The moment I took a sip into my mouth, thinking the taste would be different, my body rebelled. I spit it out and ran outside to vomit as I couldn't hold it back and that was when I knew my sickness was getting worse.

My friend offered to take me to the hospital but I didn't want to go at first, but after watching the situation for a few hours and no change, I eventually stood up, sluggishly took a bath and she held my hands to the main road for a bike to take us to the hospital.

I was tested for typhoid and fever which has gotten deep into my body. I was prescribed drugs and the kinds of food to eat for the next few days. For that period, I never took any coffee for fear of what happened before not to happen. But I wasn't myself! I felt so uneasy for not taking coffee every morning which had turned into a daily routine.

As I lay in bed, would stare at the remaining Nescafe sachets on the cabinet, hoping for the day I would be back on my feet and resume my daily coffee. That moment was a hard one, with discomfort and weakness plus the non-stop vomiting even after taking drugs. I had to go back to the hospital to be injected before I became healthy again.

For almost a week, I couldn't take my coffee. From the frustration that accompanied me when I couldn't take my daily morning coffee to the relief I had when I eventually stood up on my feet when the sickness was gone brought back the happiness in my heart.

Sickness is a bad thing and I don't wish to experience it again. So far, the sickness has disappeared since last year and I am grateful to God because I can take my coffee whenever I want with nothing restricting me except on days when I just decide not to or when there are lots of things that have occupied me just like what happened some weeks back.

Friends like that who come to us, offered us some healthily assistance when we needed their strength to lean on are the best.

lt was great she was there, hold your hands to take a bike to the hospital and you were treated of the typhoid.

I understand that feelings when we can't eat or drink something we like because of sickness, thereafter, l like it that you are enjoying that coffee anytime you want.

Yes, having such a friend is a beautiful thing for me and everyone. Sickness isn't a good thing as it would deprive on from enjoying good life and enjoyment.
Thank you, @repayme4568 for your lovely comment.

Being sick has also being a reason for me to miss out on my normal coffee routine. I could tell how difficult it was for you. Good thing you felt better.

Yea, that's one of the reasons we miss out on our routine for a cup of coffee each time. Sickness isn't a beautiful thing but we always sail through. Thanks to God.
Thank you for coming around.

That must've been a tough time for you. Typhoid is really bad and one won't be able to do anything at all. Glad you got all better and dived right into taking your coffee ☺️

Typhoid is a bad one and it was really a tough time for me not to taste coffee or any other thing I wanted.

Sorry about your illness. Hehe. You should have put the malaria medicine inside paper and powder it. Then you pour it along side the coffee powder and then enjoy it to the fullest bitterness. Since you won’t have a taste by then

Sickness really deprives us from the good things of life. It’s just like whenever we are sick we reject things that we wouldn’t reject on a normal day. I am glad you were no longer sick and you could go back to your coffee.

You are right. Sickness would make us stare at what we love eating or doing on a normal day and wouldn't have the appetite or strength for it. It's always a tough moment when we are sick and always wish we recover quickly so we can bounce back and enjoy our favourites.

For a coffee lover restricting to drinking coffee is indeed difficult. I think it was a hard time for you.
Good to hear that you have been well and fit since last year. At the same time, I feel lucky for my healthy life as I almost forgot when I became sick for the last time.

In fact, I am so grateful that I haven't been sick this year. So strange but I thank God for good health. It is always a tough time when one is sick and I don't wish anyone around me in such a situation.

I'm glad you overcame that illness. I have sometimes stopped drinking coffee because of stomach problems, but I always miss it, especially in the evenings when I like to drink it black and hot. Be well dear. A big hug from Maracay.

Yes. I don't think taking coffee when you have stomach problems is a great one. I also love drinking my coffee black and hot without adding any mixture to it. It works well that way.
Thanks for your lovely comment. Cheers 🍻 👏
