What do you do?
What do you do when you can’t write?
Often times, we find ourselves having difficulties in putting words on paper or on our laptop or phone (depending on where we write), what do we do when we find ourselves in such terrible situations?
I remember there were times when I had writers block for days, I just couldn’t come up with anything. It was almost as if my brain decided to go on an all expense paid trip without informing me about it.
Back then, I remember I only wrote fictional stories so it was very hard for me because I’ve come to realize that the people who gets hit the worse with writers block are people who have a particular niche that they write on. They can’t just write on any random topic but only write on something surrounding their niche and seeing how I was a story writer, I found it very hard to write anything because the more I forced it, the more trashy stuff I wrote.
And if there was one thing I wouldn’t want to do, it will be to put out a shitty story just because I wanted to put out a post that day and this was one of the reasons why I decided to change that niche and become a versatile writer. I decided not to write on just one niche but on anything and everything I saw. If it’s something happening online or something happening in my neighborhood, I’m writing about it. As long as it doesn’t breach anyone’s privacy or it’s not something that was told to me in secret and shouldn’t be put out in public.
And so far so good, I’ve been doing great, unfortunately being a versatile writer doesn’t completely help you escape having writer’s block, it does reduces it a bit but writer’s block will always come from time to time. So what do you do when it comes? Because one thing I do is go sit outside and just watch people walking around and going about their business. It helps clear my mind and sometimes I might be lucky enough to see something out there that might act like a prompt and help me put out a beautiful post.
Anyways, I really would love to hear what you guys do to help you overcome writer’s block because we never can tell how helpful it might be for me or anyone else who might stumble upon this post later in the future.
I totally agree with you. Having only one focus in writing can limit one's ability to explore hence the trashy stuff.
Very true.
When I have writer's block, I just start writing with something like, I am writing this post to tell you about... That usually gets me started.
Really?
Glad to know that works for you.
