The New Guy
Today at school, we got introduced to a new course and a new lecturer and for some reason, the lecturer decided that the best way to get us to relax and probably be free with him, was for him to have some fun conversation that weren't exactly school related. After a while, he started talking about our school and learning process and also urged us to always ask questions in his class because he's a man that loves having an interactive class, a class where everyone gets to ask him questions.
According to him, the question students asks helps him to know if we're following and getting a proper understanding of whatever it is he's lecturing or not. Then he went forward to ask us if we usually do ask a lot of questions in other classes.
We answered that we do ask questions but not a lot and that got me thinking. Why don't we ask a lot of questions? It didn't take long for me to come up with an answer though. You see, unlike this lecturer, some of the lecturers I've come across during lectures, have this stupid habit of asking you questions when you ask them questions. I remember during my first year in school, we had this mathematics lecturer (a lady), who would redirect any questions asked to her, back to us.
So let's say someone gets up and ask her what 5 + 5 is, instead of her to just say 10, she'd ask you what 8 + 2 is instead. And most times, the student ends up getting embarrassed because someone that doesn't know what 5+5 is, surely wouldn't know what 8+2 is either. So that placed some sort of fear in everyone and we all just stopped asking her questions.
We'd rather lie that we understood whatever trash it is she was teaching and then go ask the guys at our tutorials for help in understanding the topic better, rather than ask her questions even when she asks if we have any questions. Personally, I feel she does that on purpose to make students not ask questions and it sucks, because it just goes ahead to show how bad of a lecturer she is.
A lot of lecturers need be like the new guy, they need to encourage us to ask questions and when we do, they have to answer it and not beat around the Bush, or maybe they just don't know what they're doing.

It seems like we had similar experience with math lectures, mine was a male lecturer in my first year, his response to any question you ask him is "leave that thing"..All students including myself pray to have lecturers like the new guy but I think overtime some students don't respect them enough and they often see them as soft...
I disagree with this. I believe lecturers can relate with their students perfectly well and still get respected by them. But thanks for reading 🙂
This is why I dislike some lecturers. I believe that any student who does not know something should ask questions but some lecturers will still be asking the student questions again.
Is that how to lecture?
The lecturer in your story is a good man
I don't know why they do that.. Maybe they avoid the questions because they don't have answers to them.
so it happens that not everyone is willing. And some don't enjoy repeating themselves
Well, I believe that as a lecturer, they should learn to be willing and also prepare to repeat themselves because not everyone understands things the moment you say it. You have to explain over again before it sinks in. It's their job, they should do it well.
