Taking Things for Granted
These days, there are certain things that happen around me that just makes me realize how much people no longer takes security serious, especially here at my hostel.
I mean, I grew up in a home where my dad would always wake up in the middle of the night, just to go round the house to double check that everything was the way it should be. He would make sure the doors were locked and the windows were locked, if they needed to be.
One time I had asked him why he does all that and he had told me how it is his job to be security conscious and to make sure his family was safe. Then almost as if my question made him realize that he only had sons in the house and we too needed to be security conscious, he started carrying us along...sometimes he would ask us to go round and check that everything was the way it's suppose to be.
Those weren't the only security checks he did too, he always made sure none of our clothes stayed outside overnight. If they were still wet (maybe because we just finished washing them), we would bring it in and then take it outside first thing in the morning.
He taught us to study our environments and know what security steps to take because you have to do different things in different places.
A good example is how I always make sure to take my shoes and slippers into my room every night here at the hostel. I make sure not to leave any of it outside and that was why when one foot of everyone's slippers went missing on one particular day, I wasn't one of them.
They later found it in a strange way and many of them ended up not wearing it again due to fear of it being used for diabolical stuff, which happens to be a huge thing over here.
So you see, I've been able to escape all of that, coupled with some other stuff that has happened over here in the past due to me being security conscious of everything and everyone, even my friends.
Sadly, not everyone takes this things serious, even now, there are slippers outside of people's room and they've all gone to bed (it's currently 1:26am)... Hopefully they all don't get to learn the hard way.
Security issues should be taken seriously otherwise we may suffer loss for it. My mother is always concerned about security and I learned that from my mother.
It is probably one of the most important things out there.. I don't know why the guys here are just so nonchalant about it.
Sounds very much like my dad. In the first months after he taught me to go round and lock the doors, he would still come around himself and supervise it and correct me on how best to lock the door and make sure it is safe. This security consciousness was what I brought to the university and it helped me to always safeguard my things.
It's currently helping me right now and I'm really grateful I was brought up that way.
I think for security issues it is very important because if we are often negro then we will experience a lot of losses, since I was a child I have been taught about the discipline of my two elders.
That's really good to know.. I honestly feel being security conscious is one of the earliest things we should teach our kids for their own protection.
