The Origins of All Hallows Eve.

To understand the origin of this celebration, we must travel through 2,500 years.

_ Where we have to go?. To Ireland, specifically on the evening of October 31, we will be at the Celtic festival.

_ What are we celebrating? We are going to celebrate the last day of the harvest.

According to Celtic culture, on harvest night, the line that divides the world of the living and dead ceases to exist, giving way to the meeting of the dead with their loved ones.

_I almost forgot to tell you something important before starting our trip.

_ We must to dress up!

_ What is the purpose of dressing up?

_ Very simple, we will prevent the evil spirits who will also cross the line from harming us. We will mingle among them.

I'm going to put on my witch costume so in case if I was in trouble; I would prefer to fly instead of running.
_ What is yours? Since we're camouflaged, we can start the tour and see what we find.

A large bonfire located in the center of the village is the first thing we will notice; we know fire is a purifying element and was another way the Celts sought to scare away evil spirits; the villagers gather around it to share throughout the night, and the early morning.

Villagers walk through the town's roads, wearing costumes made of animal skins. They wear their faces covered with masks others paint their faces in different colors, and the most predominant color is black. Seeing my modest custom, I cross my fingers.

As we go deeper into the village, we will find children, young people, and the elderly carving turnips and introducing a candle inside. The windows and doors of houses are lighted with candles, and on the cornices of windows are dishes containing either sweets, apples, or cakes.

I am somewhat curious about these activities, but I don't dare to ask anyone, but luckily me at the entrance of one house, a child asks his mother to explain again about the celebration.

The young mother explains to her son that they placed candles so the spirits of loved ones could find their way home; food and sweets were to welcome them. The turnips they were carving and putting a candle on were to scare away evil spirits.

Once our curiosity has been satisfied, I think it's time to return to the present century. We don't want some spirit to play a trick or treat on us.

We have reached the end of this trip, where we took a brief tour through the origins of the Halloween celebration. I hope you have not brought any object of that time carelessly; it would be terrible if some spirit came to claim it.

Te invito a hacer un viaje a través de la noche de Halloween

La celebración de Halloween ha evolucionado a lo largo de los años, son muchos los países quienes han adoptado esta celebración, incorporándole elementos propios de su cultura. Estados Unidos y México son los países donde la noche de Halloween es la más esperada del año.

¿Pero sabemos cuáles son los orígenes de esta celebración? ¿Cuáles eran los preparativos y actividades que se llevaban a cabo esa noche? Acompáñame a descubrirlo. Vamos a ello.

Origen de la noche de Halloween.

Para entender el origen de estas fiestas debemos viajar 2.500 años a través, ¿A dónde? A Irlanda, específicamente a la noche del 31 de octubre, y nos ubicaremos en el festival Celta. ¿Qué celebramos? Celebramos el último día de la temporada de la cosecha.

Según la cultura Celta esa noche, la línea que divide el mundo de los vivos y muertos, deja de existir, dando paso al encuentro de los muertos con sus seres queridos.

Casi se me olvida decirles algo muy importante, antes de comenzar el viaje. ¡Debemos disfrazarnos! ¿Cuál es el objetivo de disfrazarnos? Muy simple, evitaremos que los espíritus malignos que también cruzarán la línea no nos hagan daño. Nos mezclaremos entre ellos.

Yo me voy a colocar el disfraz de bruja. En caso de estar en problemas, preferiría volar en vez de correr ¿Cuál es tu disfraz? Ya que estamos disfrazados y seguros, podemos empezar nuestra visita, a ver qué nos encontramos.

Una gran hoguera ubicada en el centro del pueblo es lo primero que notaremos. El fuego es un elemento purificador y era otra manera en que los celtas buscaban espantar a los malos espíritus. Los pobladores se reúnen en torno a ella para compartir durante toda la noche y madrugada.

Otros pobladores pasean por las calles del pueblo, luciendo sus disfraces fabricados con pieles de animales. Llevan sus rostros cubiertos con mascaras, otros se pintan el rostro de diferentes colores, el color que más predomina es el negro. Viendo mi modesto disfraz, cruzo mis dedos.

Al adéntranos mas en el pueblo encontraremos a niños, jóvenes y ancianos tallando nabos e introduciendo una vela en su interior, en las ventanas y puertas de las casas hay velas encendidas, en las cornisas de las ventanas hay platos que contiene bien sea dulces, manzanas y pasteles.

Siento algo de curiosidad por estas actividades, pero no me atrevo a preguntarle a nadie, pero para mi suerte en la entrada de una de las casas un niño le pide a su madre que le explique otra vez sobre la celebración.

La joven madre le explica a su hijo que colocaban velas para que los espíritus de los seres queridos pudieran hallar el camino a casa; la comida y dulces estaban ahí para darles la bienvenida. Y que los nabos que estaban tallando para luego ponerles una vela eran para espantar a los malos espíritus.

Una vez satisfecha nuestra curiosidad, creo que hora de volver al presente siglo. No queremos que algún fantasma nos juegue una broma.

Y bien amigos hemos llegado al final de este viaje en donde dimos un breve recorrido a través de los orígenes de la celebración de Halloween, espero no se hayan traído por descuido ningún objeto de esa época, sería terrible que algún espíritu viniera a reclámalo.
