The Veg Patch Diaries: Entry 02
Disclaimer: I am in no way a professional gardener. In all honesty, I have basic knowledge at best and next zero practical experience. This is simply me chronicling my adventures in vegetable gardening!
Slow Two Weeks
It has been a frustratingly slow two weeks on the vegetable gardening front. This has been due to a combination of things. The sudden cold fronts meant I delayed planting seeds outside. And my less-than-optimal physical state prevented me from moving around a lot. My mental state has also once again taken a bit of a knock. Needless to say, I have been a little frustrated as a result.
I wasn't even sure I should post an update, but I did promise myself that I was going to be doing this weekly. Last week wasn't a Veg Patch Diary per se, but it was garden related. I was making some DIY Plant Markers. I had hoped to be planting seeds out this weekend past, but it was not to be. I can however show you a little bit of what has been going on at the Veg Patch.
Preparation and Recon
In my first Veg Patch Diary entry I showcased us preparing the area in the garden that was going to host our veggies. So I thought it would be great to show you what it looks like now.
Winston inspecting the empty veg patch.
All leveled out the old raised beds have been removed. I also found another old pot which I had help getting to this area. You'll also see that I used a few twigs to help mark where the afternoon shade falls. This was just so that I could better plan what should stand where in terms of how much sun or shade it preferred.
Sprinkler coverage check!
I had my mom-in-law turn on the sprinklers while I was standing there so I could get an idea of the sprinkler coverage. While I was standing out of range of the sprinkler in the photo, I was a bit of an idiot and didn't notice there was one behind me as well. My rear end and the back of my legs got completely soaked, haha!
Escaping the sprinklers!
It would seem that about 85% of the bedding gets sprinkler coverage. It's only one 'slice' at the back where the rectangular pot is in the photograph that doesn't really get water from the sprinkler. You can also see the sprinkler that gave me a free outdoor shower. I had to go change pants after taking this photo, haha!
Seedlings
Although I had planted out most of the seedlings we had gotten, I had yet to plant out the spinach. And with the approaching cold fronts, the sooner I got that done the better. I decided I was going to make use of that rectangular pot and I got right into it. I managed to fit five of the seedlings in there with the sixth having to go into a separate pot. It seemed like one of the five seedlings was somehow already damaged. I considered not planting it out at all but I decided I would give it a chance to recover.
I then moved all the seedlings to the official Veg Patch bedding from where they had been temporarily standing.
Seedlings ahoy!
And there you have it, the humble beginnings of the Veg Patch, slowly starting to come together. It's not a very big update, but it is something. I have been checking on the seedlings every second or third day to make sure they get at least some water as we don't turn on the sprinklers very often.
I am hoping that this week my body will at least allow me to get some of the seeds planted, as I am itching to expand already. I especially want to get Rocket growing, so that I have a fresh supply available, not only for myself but for our bearded dragon, Lily.
Thanks!
As always, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read my ramblings. Hopefully, the next entry will be a bit more exciting.

Love it! Watching the babies grow is so satisfying after all the work!
I'm really proud of one of the lettuce plants, it is doing extremely well. I'll be able to grab my first leaf off it soon!
Awesome!! Ours were supposed to make seeds, but didn't. So we gotta take them out
Yummy crisp lettuce leaves! The best thing is when it is hot and you crunch down on one!
