European EVP party wants to postpone ban on combustion engines as of 2035. Finally some common sense!

Shooting in our own foot

The European Commission decided it last year, no more new cars can be sold with a combustion engine as of 2035. Ursula Von Der Leyen looked like she had saved the planet on her own when she announced the news.
Now, 18 months later, the situation is a lot different. The complete European car industry is in a crisis like never experienced before. Even Germany, the biggest market for new cars in Europe doesn’t buy new cars anymore, at least a lot less than what they used to do.

Too expensive, too short ranged

Reasons for the crash of the market are easy to find. The electric vehicles are way too expensive and their range is too short for the customer.
Now, the car lobby and Stellantis, the organisation behind Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, etc… have hit the alarm bell. They have asked the European Commission to postpone the new CO2 restrictions for cars that are planned for the first of January of 2025. A desperate cry for help!

But also the political parties are seeing the severity of the problem. EVP, the conglomerate of centre right parties in Europe have asked for a postponement of the ban on combustion engines in 2035. They fear a total collapse of European car industry and a movement of the industry to China.

Finally they have found common sense, and have realised they have shot themselves in their own foot. Europe has placed itself out of the market with unrealistic propositions for a greener car park.

Let’s hope the European Commission is smart enough to follow the cry for help!

Sincerely,
