Australia forbids social media under 16, Belgium wants to follow…

Orwellian

Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese has officially pulled through a new legislation about social media and children. And he even got the approval of the opposition. The complete law probably pass by the end of 2025.

An Orwellian piece of legislation in which children under the age of 16 will be banned from X, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat and probably YouTube too.
The reasoning behind it is that there is too much fake news, misinformation and hate speech on these platforms. The responsibility will lie completely with the platforms themselves. They will have to ensure that the people that create an account on the platform are over 16. And they will be fined if they get caught giving an account to someone younger than 16.

Belgium and Sweden

Sweden has now placed the age limit at 15, and Belgian politicians want to follow the path of Australia, but for that Belgium will have to form a new government first…

The dark net is close

Opponents of this regulation, and myself are pointing to the fact that responsibility lies with the parents and government shouldn’t interfere in that.
And more importantly, it will drive youngsters to search for other ways to interact over the internet like Telegram or other (anonymous) platforms, and even worse, end up on the dark net, which is a longer way from home than regular social media…

Personal freedom

Governments all over the world have the urge to intervene and interfere in everything and every part of our lives. The question is, what is left to our personal choice and freedom of choice…

Make Orwell fiction again!

Sincerely,
