[Eng+Spa] Daiquiri Day + Día del Daiquirí 🍹

Today is Wednesday, I went out to do some shopping, and I came back home relatively quickly, everything was smooth, and I like that a lot, after all, I love my #life to be as calm as possible. The weather of these recent days has been one of almost constant rain, but today the sky was clear enough that I did not fear that a storm would hit before I had time to get home. Apart from those little things, there is not much to tell.

Seeing the situation like this, my life actually becomes very calm when considering the big picture. In short, not having more to report in my personal record from day to day, we better move on to comment on the #History ephemeris that is celebrated today, because I read in the list of these ephemeris several interesting commemorations, but there was one that caught my attention, partly because of its Latin American origin, or Caribbean if we are more specific, 125 years ago, it is a commemoration that brings me to the topic of #cooking, or rather #liquors, I suppose a younger cousin would say that it is a matter of #cocktails, and I would be absolutely right, since it is celebrated on 'Daikirí Day', a #drink born in Cuba, from the mixture of #Rum (which they sources assure me was from the #Bacardi brand), sugar, ice and fresh lime juice (although there are records that it was lemon juice, so I'm not sure).

Hoy es miércoles, salí a hacer algunas comprar, y regresé a casa relativamente rápido, todo fue sin complicaciones y eso me gusta bastante, después de todo, me gusta que mi #vida sea lo más tranquila que se pueda. El clima de estos días recientes ha sido de lluvia casi constante, pero hoy estaba lo suficientemente despejado el cielo como para que no me temiera que cayera una tormenta antes de que me diera tiempo de volver a casa. Fuera de esas pequeñas cosas, no hay mucho que contar.

Viendo así la situación, mi vida pasa a ser realmente muy tranquila si se considera el panorama general. En fin, que no habiendo más que reportar en mi registro personal del día a día, mejor pasemos a comentar sobre la efeméride de la #Historia que se celebra hoy, pues leí en el listado de estas efemérides varias conmemoraciones interesante, pero hubo una que me llamó la atención, en parte por su origen latinoamericano, o caribeño si somos más específicos, hace 125 años, se trata de una conmemoración que me lleva al tema de la #cocina, o de #licores más bien, supongo que mi prima pequeña diría que es un tema de #cocteles y tendría toda la razón, pues se celebra el ‘Día del Daikirí’, una #bebida nacida en cuba, de la mezcla de #Ron (que me aseguran que era de la marca #Bacardi), azúcar, hielo y jugo de lima fresco (aunque hay registros que era jugo de limón, así que no lo tengo claro).

The #Daikiri cocktail is the second most popular among consumers of these #alcoholic beverages, according to the report published by the Bacardi company in 2023 (https://d3bbd6es2y3ctk.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/04170856/Bacardi-Cocktail-Trends-Report-2023.pdf), giving particular relevance to its history and evolution. Let us begin by pointing out that it was on July 19, 1898, an American engineer named Jennings Cox, who worked in an iron mine in Santiago de Cuba, wanted to prepare a refreshing drink in the face of the incredible heat typical of the tropical zone, he had visits from his friends and he wanted to entertain them. But his initial idea was complicated by the absence of gin, which was the liquor that was said to be initially used to prepare a cocktail, so he used a local liquor, rum (very typical of Caribbean culture and tied to the old stories of sailors and pirates from centuries past).

Cox had in mind a mix that was simple and added something new to the glass, ice, more specifically, ice slush. At its beginning, the mixture of this drink with citric, sweet and cold additive, was called Rum Sour. I was wondering when the name was changed, luckily most of the sources that I found indicated that it had not been long since its creation, when a friend of Cox, the Italian engineer Giacomo Pagliuchi tried the drink and convinced him to take the recipe to a bar in the area, the 'Bar American', achieving almost instant success, it happens that they were close to a well-known beach, and they gave the drink its name, it was the 'Daiquirí Beach', which due to the North American pronunciation ended up internationalizing the cocktail with the name of Daikiri.

This drink traveled the world, and its recipe became known on all continents. It could be said that its expansion was hand in hand with the North Americans, since they were the ones who gave it a notable boost. Among all the promoters and consumers of this drink, the North American writer Ernest Hemingway is very much in mind, who became very fond of this cocktail during his stay in Havana (Cuba).

Something interesting is that the base of the drink has given rise to different variations, which include additions of bananas, strawberries, peaches, and all kinds of varieties of fruit. Everything was left to the creativity and good taste of the bartenders and their abilities to come up with the most successful mixes in each case. Now that I think about it, I don't drink much, but I fixed the date because of the memory of a younger cousin who studied to be a #bartender and nowadays, she lives outside the country, she emigrated several years ago.

Algo interesante, es que la base del trago ha dado pie a distintas variaciones, que incluyen agregados de plátano, fresas, duraznos, y toda clase de variedades de frutas. Todo quedó a la creatividad y buen gusto de los bartenders y sus habilidades para dar con las mezclas más exitosas en cada caso. Ahora que lo pienso, yo no bebo mucho, pero me fijé en la fecha por el recuerdo de una prima más joven que estudio para ser bartender y hoy en día vive fuera del país, emigró hace varios años.
