Once a soldier, now in trenches

I arrive home a useless man
I man devoid of happiness and joy
A man deprived of love and care
A patriotic citizen with no reward

Serving my fatherland devotedly
At my very own peril
Giving up my family
Giving up emotions
Giving up my pleasure
That my country get it all

I obeyed the Clarion call a day long
A call to selfless sacrifice
I had put my future at stake
And here lays my remains

As I drink away my sorrows
Ending up on the streets
I regret my return
With amputated arms
Back to the trenches I come

I have refused to be console
What more could be done with my life
What is left is of no use
I've got nothing to live for

I never gave love a chance
Probably that would have kept me on my feet
I had lived my whole life at the barracks
Only to return with no limbs
With no shelter over my head

Is this how a selfless soldier is rewarded?
Is my pains a payback for my loyalty to my homeland?
Is this all I get for giving out so much?

At this juncture I would advice the teenagers
Vibrant young guys whose high hopes lay in the barracks
It's no fun over there
It's a circle of life or death

Brace up, oh thee
Balance your lives and never give more than you can give
Find love and let it stay
That you may find solace on your return from that experience

As I waste away with no legacy passed on
I solicit and wish you guys well
May my life never be yours
It's an awful story to want to experience

If this is the reward, why join the army?
Thanks for your entry.
