A dream fulfilled.

Standing in the middle of the lake, I made a video of the surroundings.

But this was my first target, as I needed to get closer to the flamingos in the last strip of water in the lake. The rest of the lake was all dried up as you will see below.

Now, you might not believe me, but I dared myself to walk right across on the dry and crusted surface of the lake. My wife was with me, and this below is the footpath that we followed. When the winter rains arrive, even this footpath will be under water, as this is a very big lake.

My wife decided to stop there, as her excuse was that she wanted to only pick up some flamingo feathers. I just hoped that I wouldn't step on a wet spot with a donga underneath that would swallow me.

175.JPG
So, I kept on walking and if you have a keen eye, you will see my wife standing at the edge just below the mountain.

167.JPG
This is where I was going, and the flamingos can be seen off center in the strip of water.

The sand surface changed into dry crusts and the darker colors means that it was still wet underneath the crusts.

The video below will explain the picture above.

And now some flamingo photos.

The area closer to the flamingos was a greenish wet color, and I could not walk over it, but my zoom could and I took some quick shots of the flamingos. It is almost time for them to leave on their annual trip up into the north of Africa, as winter is on its way, and they will only return here next spring to breed again.

An amazing place during the spring season, as hundreds of species of birds come to breed here in this lake. Some as small as the sandpipers and other breeds, such as snipes, plovers, godwits, shanks, turnstones, redknots, stints, phalaropes, lapwings, and a range of bigger birds, such as herons, cormorants, geese, ducks, coots, etc. can be found in this lake during the spring and summer months. Then of course there are also the animals, like the springboks, brahman cattle, donkeys, horses, otters, tortoises, rabbits, and whatnots make an appearance here.
A serene time can be had here for a few hours on a day, and that's why we like to visit here.
Such is life.

I hope you have enjoyed and like the story and the pictures.

That looks like a place worth checking out every day :) ... how dangerous is it to walk out there on the dried lake bottom?

Unfortunately, we don't have the time to go there every day. I don't know, but I walk lightly on the crusts, like a cat on a hot tin roof, and I avoid the dark crusts, as it means that there is water and maybe a donga under them :)

I'd probably either take a stick along and poke it every few feet, or have another person along to walk far behind, with a rope connecting us 🤣

Quicksand sounds like a bad way to go 😂

Nah! Good ideas, but I am very sure footed during times like this. Just a pity that I could not get any closer to the flamingos, as that green mud will take months to wash off 😜

Quicksand is a scary thing to disappear into my friend 😲

Flamingos are beautiful! But the drying ponds sadden me.
