The power of perception

Hello, beautiful people! Welcome to my blog. It's a pleasure to have you in this space. Once again, welcome 🤗

I grew up hearing a popular adage from my dad: a good name is better than riches, of which I later found out to be a scripture in the Bible. My dad so much believed in this adage that he made sure he instilled it in us, his children. He made sure we understood the importance of having a good reputation and why we must have it. To have a good name means you must be a person of integrity and character; you must be honest, reliable, and kind.

Reputation and public image are very important aspects of human interaction. Having a good reputation fosters trust, and we all know that trust is the foundation of a healthy relationship, be it personal or professional. People would want to engage and do business with someone who is known for their integrity and honesty.

Sometime last year, my husband wanted to give his clothes to a young fashion designer to sew for him; he had seen the guys work and they were good. Prior to that day, I was talking to someone when this guy's name came up in the conversation, and I was surprised by what I heard about him and his business. I made further investigation to be sure of what I heard, and it happened that he had disappointed a lot of people and he is not reliable; they were people whose clothes had been with him for over 8–12 months with full money paid but he hasn't delivered their work.

Though he is very good at sewing, his reputation with people is bad. People are attracted to people with strong reputations—someone they perceive to be very credible, honest, and reliable.

Public imaging plays an important role in society. There are people in our society or neighborhood today that are respected and accepted because of their positive image.

There was this time in my former area that the people wanted to choose Mai Anguwa (a leader in the area). According to the rule, they were supposed to choose the person that has stayed in the area the longest, but the area people didn't agree with the rule because the man who was to become the next leader was a bad person. They made a lot of complaints about him on how he has cheated and disrespected a lot of people in the area. There was a poll, and people ended up choosing a different man who had not spent up to 10 years in the area because of how everyone was raining his praise.

Having a good public image and reputation can also open one up to numerous doors of opportunity. I have heard stories of how people got job opportunities because someone recommended them for their competence and character.

As much as possible we should all strive to build a good reputation and public image. Build meaningful relationships with others by earning their trust and also have or leave positive impact in their lives. That's where true wealth lies.

Building a good reputation is good and having a good character to back it up is better.
