BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! AIMLESS

image.png

Hello there.

Today I'll share my battle under the Aimless ruleset. But first, I will share some of my thoughts regarding it. With the Aimless ruleset, all monsters have the Scattershot ability. This affects both Range and Magic attacks. Scattershot takes precedence over the Sneak, Snipe, and Opportunity abilities, making all of them hit random targets.

In this ruleset, I usually try to ignore it and just focus on Melee attacks since I don't like to spread my damage. If Melee is not available, I will try to use Triage, Life Leech, Scavenger, and Protect to try and keep my team healthy, and possibly out-heal the damage. I can also place martyr cards in the middle, and hope they get taken out early, and buff my team.

Of course, the ones above are just guidelines. Since we can have up to 3 rulesets in a battle, these can change quickly. If a taunt monster is available, I'll probably include one in the back to at least spread the damage in case they have the same idea of using Melee monsters.

I believe that being flexible in battle is the ideal strategy. Check the opponent's history, check what they are most likely to use, and counter it. But always pick teams that can also counter different strategies.

Without further ado, let's get into the battle.

The Ruleset

This was a Wild tournament battle, so it was a Bronze battle with Unprotected, and Aimless Rulesets. A 42 mana battle is on the high amount. Only Fire, Water, and Death are available, and I can think of a lot of different strategies for each so I will try to counter as much as I can.

The ideal team for Fire is Yodin to maximize the Aimless, but Tarsa with Sneak and Opportunity monsters is also good. For Water, Possibilus with Opportunity monsters will be able to focus on the backline. For Death, Mimosa is good to counter a lot of strategies. Windeku can take care of the melee attacks.

The Lineup

CardAbilityComments
image.pngIncreases the HP of ally monsters by 2 and grants Melee allies Trample and ReachThe extra HP can help replace the missing armor, while the Trample and Reach are good for my strategy of using Melee monsters.
image.pngInspireI want to increase my melee monsters' attacks. This will also serve as my tank to buy time for my Coastal Sentry to deal damage.
image.pngDouble StrikeMy highest damage dealer. I'm hoping the Double Strike + Inspire can make quick work of the enemy tank.
image.pngMartyrWith Aimless, I'm hoping it can die early and buff my two highest damage monsters.
image.pngWeapons Training, OpportunityMy second carry, and my main backline access. I'm hoping I can make quick work of the backline while proccing the Trample.
image.pngOpportunityThis is just a filler, but it still works well with Inspire and Possibilus. I'm just hoping it can lower the backline's HP in preparation for my other Opportunity monsters.
image.pngOpportunityMy Sneak tank, as well as last Opportunity monster. I'm hoping it can clean up any backline that survived Kulu's attack.

For me, between the lineups I mentioned above, I'd rather go with a Possibilus Melee team. I don't have Yodin, and the Opportunity attacks can be a way to focus on one target as opposed to my opponent's scattered attacks. The trample can be a way to supplement my damage, and can cause a cascade of deaths for my opponent.

The Matchup

image.png

My opponent decided to go with a Yodin. The Aimless and Blast will be able to deal a lot of damage, and I hope my 2 additional HP from Possibilus will be enough to weather their early barrage. I need to be able to quickly kill the Coeurl Lurker if I were to have any chance of winning this battle.

End of Round 1

image.png

Well that was a very bloody first round. My Marksrat died first which was perfect. My Battering Ram died afterward, which was fine. I luckily only missed once against the Lurker, and as I said above, my succeeding attacks caused a cascade of deaths because of the Trample. My Deeplurker was able to deal the killing blow on the Lurker, and dealt 4 damage to Tenyii. My Demented Shark then killed Tenyii, and the Trample attack also killed the Serpentine Spy. And just like that, I am heavily favored to win the battle.

End of the Battle

Ash Mirage was able to attack and deal damage, but that was it. Kulu killed the Fire Beetle, and damaged Ash Mirage with the Trample attack. Coastal Sentry then finished the battle with a double strike + trample. I didn't even need my Deeplurker and Demented Shark's attacks for this round.

I will have to say that I was surprised with the outcome of that battle. This might be one of my fastest win in a high mana battle. Having it come against a max Bronze level Yodin team is just the icing on the cake. I will admit that a lot of good things happened for me to get this one sided looking win. My Martyr dying early, and my monsters not missing against the Lurker was a big part of it. If I missed one more attack against the lurker, I think the match would have been much closer, or I would have lost outright.

Conclusion

In tournaments where there are additional limitations on top of the Rulesets and banned elements, I try to make it a point to look at the possible teams and imagine them fighting against one another. I will then choose the team which I think is best. For this specific battle, my opponent used a very strong team composition that I was ready for. We both had a lot of damage available and the battle was going to end quickly. The Coeurl Lurker was the X factor, and fortunately for me, my monsters did not miss a lot of attacks against it. I ended up with the win, but it was a closer battle than it looked.

I didn't really understand what the scattershot ability is, can you explain it again

Sure thing. Usually, a monster with Range or Magic attack will target the opposing monster in the first position. Abilities like Sneak, Snipe, and Opportunity are able to change that targeting towards the last position [Sneak], first monster with a non-melee/no attack in the 2nd-6th position [Snipe], or targeting the opposing monster with the lowest HP [Opportunity]. If a player uses a Taunt monster, then all those targeting abilities are redirected towards the Taunt monster.

The Scattershot ability, on the other hand, makes these Range and Magic attacks hit random opponents. Even if there is a Taunt monster, or during the Fog of War ruleset, Scattershot attacks will still hit random enemy targets. They can hit the 2nd position on the first round, and then hit the 6th position on the second round. Additionally, Scattershot is one way to hit Camouflage units in the backline.

I included the other abilities above because there is a priority with the targeting abilities. If a monster has multiple abilities [ex. Scattershot and Sneak], then the ability with the highest priority will be followed. Scattershot has the highest precedence, followed by Sneak, then Snipe, and then Opportunity. Here is the team's infographic:

Sorry if it got a bit long, Scattershot affects/ignores a lot of things. I hope you were able to understand it more now.

Thank you for this very complete answer. Are you a very experienced SPlinterlands player? If YES, could you make some posts about LAND?

You're welcome. I have been playing since 2021, so I'd like to consider myself experienced. Unfortunately, I didn't have the funds for Land, so I don't have any. If you have joined the Splinterlands Discord, you can try asking there for good posts/guide about land. One streamer that plays Splinterlands, and is active in the community is Bulldog1205, and he has created a land guide video. You can check it out here, or you can go to his profile and check it out:
