First of all, cordial greetings to the Top Five Family community, today I decided to participate in this contest, after commenting on a friend's post. El pernil de la esperanza /The pernil of hope:

En casa, es tradición hacer el pernil todos los años, junto a la ensalada de gallina y el pan de jamón para la cena, si existe la posibilidad de tener hallacas las colocamos en la cena, pero los tres primeros platos nombrados, normalmente no faltan.

At home, it is tradition to make the pernil every year, along with chicken salad and ham bread for dinner, if there is the possibility of having hallacas we place them in the dinner, but the first three dishes named, usually are not missing.

Sin embargo, este año no lo íbamos a hacer cena de despedida del año viejo, debido a que mi hermano murió el día 6 de octubre de este año, debido a eso, mi madre ha estado muy ensimismada y algo triste, y como bien se sabe en Venezuela, esta normalmente es una cena familiar y casi siempre en unidad familiar y en nuestras familias, nuestras madres son el pilar, así que había decidido no hacer nada especial.

However, this year we were not going to have a farewell dinner for the old year, because my brother died on October 6 of this year, because of that, my mother has been very self-absorbed and somewhat sad, and as it is well known in Venezuela, this is usually a family dinner and almost always in family unity and in our families, our mothers are the pillar, so I had decided not to do anything special.

Pero para mi sorpresa, mi madre me comentó hoy que había un pernil en el congelador y que quería que yo lo preparase como todos los años.

But to my surprise, my mother told me today that there was a pernil in the freezer and that she wanted me to prepare it as I do every year.

Cuando hablé con ella, ya no estaba tan triste y me dijo algo que me pegó y fue lo siguiente, “Tú, tienes razón en lo que me dijiste, la vida continúa y mal o bien debemos seguir adelante y no dejar que la tristeza nos venza, al contrario, el mejor regalo para tu hermano es seguir adelante y hacerlo con alegría”.

When I talked to her, she was no longer so sad and she told me something that hit me and it was the following, "You, you are right in what you told me, life goes on and wrong or right we must go ahead and not let sadness overcome us, on the contrary, the best gift for your brother is to go ahead and do it with joy".

Me llamó mucho la atención, que el pernil, que era la comida de estas fecha que más le gustaba a mi hermano, fuese lo que hiciese que mi mamá reaccionara de manera positiva y con su alegría de siempre, así que mañana comenzaré a hacer la maceración de mi famoso pernil borracho, para que lo disfrutemos en la noche del 31.

I was very surprised that the pernil, which was my brother's favorite food on this date, was what made my mom react in a positive way and with her usual joy, so tomorrow I will start making the maceration of my famous drunken pernil, so we can enjoy it on the night of the 31st.

Normalmente, yo suelo sazonar el pernil, con orégano, sal y otras especies, pero además de eso preparo un aderezo, con vino Sagrada Familia, Cerveza y oto licor, le coloco las especies, las cuales preparo aparte, hago incisiones profundas en el pernil y luego después de estar sazonado, lo coloco a macerar por unas 12 horas con el preparado de especies y licor que hago antes de meterlo al horno.

Normally, I usually season the pork leg with oregano, salt and other spices, but besides that I prepare a dressing with Sagrada Familia wine, beer and other liquor, I put the spices, which I prepare separately, I make deep incisions in the pork leg and then after being seasoned, I put it to macerate for about 12 hours with the preparation of spices and liquor that I make before putting it in the oven.

El resultado de semejante trabajo, es que normalmente queda el hueso, para hacer las primeras caraotas del año, de las cuales, casi nunca queda ni un grano cundo yo las cocino.

The result of such work is that the bone is usually left to make the first caraotas of the year, of which there is almost never a single grain left when I cook them.

En fin, el ver a mi madre encargar el pernil, me dio esperanza, sabiendo que ella ya está mejor y que aunque mi hermano ya no está, podremos sortear juntos todo lo que se nos presente como familia como siempre lo hemos hecho.

Anyway, seeing my mother order the pernil, gave me hope, knowing that she is already better and that although my brother is no longer here, we will be able to get through everything together as a family as we have always done.
