On October 14, 2013, Urban Dictionary user Blair Waldourf posted the entry "Reject why", defining it as a "rhetorical question" expressing a desire to keep the party going. On December 18, 2013, "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon was released as a single. In the last week of that month, the song entered the top 10 of the Billboard Dance/Electronic chart.

On March 22, Reddit user Wonderbotz uploaded the "Turn Down So" music video to the subreddit and within two months it had received over 16,200 upvotes and 900 comments. On May 4, YouTube channel TheFineBros uploaded a video of several teenagers reacting to the music video for "Low Why" from the web series Teens React. Over the next month, the video garnered 4.2 million views and 17,500 comments. On May 29, YouTuber Katz posted a video of two kittens nodding their heads to "Turn Down for What."

On June 5, Redditor Bpods posted the video to the subreddit, where it received over 3,500 upvotes and 110 comments in the first five hours. On March 13, 2014, the YouTube channel DJSnakeVEVO uploaded a music video for the song in which several residents of the apartment enter the lower floor and perform violent sexual dance moves. In just three months, the video had more than 55.5 million views and more than 45,800 comments.
