Talent in My Heart

In the heart of the bustling and beautiful ancient city of Benin, on a warm Sunday afternoon, the Abaku family gathered in their spacious living room. Mr. Abaku, dressed in his traditional Benin attire, sat on his favorite armchair, exuding an air of authority. Mrs. Abaku sat across from him, her eyes filled with determination and her voice ready to challenge opposing opinions.
Obele, the eldest son, leaned against the wall, crossing his arms and biting his lips in annoyance. Adesuwa, his sister, sat on the couch, her hands tightly gripping the edges. The tension in the room was high, as they were in a heated argument. They disagreed about Obele’s decision to pursue a career in the arts, a path Mr. Abaku considered impractical and frivolous.

Mr. Abaku broke the silence, his deep voice resonating through the room."We came from a long line of successful businessmen and engineers. Obele, I cannot believe you would choose such a path. The arts will not bring you stability and prosperity!"
Obele's expression stiffened as he stood his ground."Father, I understand your concerns, but I have a passion for creativity. I want to express myself through art because I strongly believe I can make a meaningful impact in the world."
Mrs. Abaku, unable to stay quiet any longer,"My husband, Obele, has a right to follow his dreams. You should support him instead of dismissing his aspirations," she blurted impatiently.
Mr.Abaku's face flushed with frustration."Did I hear you say to support him? Support him in what? We worked hard to build a respected name, and you want me to throw away our family legacy?Adesuwa, known for her diplomacy, spoke up in an attempt to mediate."Father, I understand your concerns about stability, but times are changing, and we have to adapt. It's not fair to force Obele into a career he doesn't want. We should encourage individuality and support each other's choices. And passion".
The room fell silent once again, the air heavy with unspoken thoughts and conflicting emotions. As the silence stretched on, each family member's gaze shifted from one face to another, searching for a glimmer of understanding or acceptance; sadly, there was none. Obele entered his room, emerged with his luggage, and left without saying a word or looking back. For years, Obele refused to either contact or visit home.

Obele’s studio was spacious, adorned with colorful canvases and brushes. He stood before his latest masterpiece. His artwork has evolved into a unique blend of traditional Benin motifs and contemporary styles, capturing the essence of his heritage with a modern twist. Obele had become a rising star in the art world, and the world had taken notice of his talent. The news of Obele’s exceptional artwork began to spread like wildfire. Critics praised his ability to encapsulate complex emotions on his canvas, and art enthusiasts were captured by the vividness and depth of his creations. It wasn't long before prestigious arts organizations and galleries from across the globe clamored to exhibit his work.

One morning, as the sun painted the sky with hues of gold, Obele received an unexpected call. It was from a renowned art collector who had seen his artwork at an exhibition. The collector expressed immense interest in acquiring Obele's entire collection for an exorbitant sum of money. It was an offer that would change Obele's life forever.
The news of Obele's lucrative deal spread through the Abaku household like wildfire. The once-controversial pursuit of a career in the arts had proven to be a triumph beyond their wildest dreams. Mr. Abaku, sitting in his study surrounded by books and ledgers, couldn't help but feel a mixture of astonishment and pride. He had come to realize that his son's passion had opened doors to a world he never thought possible.

The walls of the Abaku’s sophisticated living room were adorned with Obele’s paintings, each one a testament to his talent and vision. They sat together, tension filling the air. A cloud of silence enveloped them, broken only by the distant sound of car horns and the occasional barking of their neighbor's dog. The room buzzed with anticipation as they awaited Obele's arrival. Obele entered the room, dressed in a tailored suit. Their eyes widened with astonishment as they marveled at the transformation of their once struggling artist into a wealthy and influential figure. Mrs.Abaku, beaming with pride, embraced her son tightly, unable to contain her joy.
"Obele, my son, you're now a renowned artist, basking in the fame of your success".
"Yes mother I travel the world, attending gallery openings and rubbing shoulders with fellow creatives and art connoisseurs. My artwork commands staggering prices, making me one of the wealthiest artists of this generation."
Obele looked around, nodding his head as he noticed the wall was adorned with his paintings.
"Obele, your paintings are worth more than all of our father’s business deals combined," Adesuwa said jokingly, hiding her face in her palms as she giggled. The room was filled with laughter. Mr. Abaku, now wearing a smile of appreciation, approached Obele.
"Son, I must admit, I was wrong. Your passion and talent have not only brought you wealth but also a level of recognition and respect that I never anticipated. I am proud of you," he said as he walked towards Obele and gently dragged him, hugging him tightly and patting his back simultaneously. Obele completely wrapped his arms around his father, forcing back tears.

In the days that followed, conversations were had, emotions were shared, and wounds were acknowledged. The Abaku family embarked on a journey of healing, with each small act of kindness and understanding becoming the building blocks of reconciliation. Laughter returned to their home, chasing away the heavy atmosphere that had shrouded them.

It's a beautiful thing for a child to have a dream and that dream really comes true with the support of others. The parents are the first and best curators. It seems though Obele's art may be a result of his family struggles. If the family struggles are gone then his muse may also leave.

Beautiful story. Again success is your only answer to people who think less of you. I'm happy that Obele stood his ground, and made a name for himself through his passion. Interesting read.
