Parish Church of Santa Maria do Freixo / Marco de Canaveses

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Igreja Paroquial de Santa Maria do Freixo.jpg

Before going on the guided tour of Tongobriga, right where we stopped the car we found a beautiful church.
Here in this area, everything is properly restored and recovered and, as Mr. Jorge told us, many of these houses were built with all the stone that was removed from the land when it was disturbed and treated so that people could come here to live.

All you had to do was plow the land and you would find immense Roman remains on the surface, from crockery to earrings, bracelets and everything you can imagine. The amount of material that was lost must have been enormous, when whoever found these remains had no idea of the history they had in their hands.

We met a friend here who kept us company throughout the visit but who I will tell you later on.
Many of the churches in these villas gave rise to the parish temples that emerged later. Its territories, often coinciding with a valley, gave rise to many of the current parishes. In this way, communities or villages ended up being created.

The parish of Santa Maria do Freixo is a unique case. The villas mentioned in the oldest medieval documentation gave rise to simple places that apparently never had their own church, and were later integrated into the parish of Freixo.
It is a parish whose church is located in a place that, for long periods of its history, had little more than the church itself, given its topographical location, in a high place, the poverty of its soil and the absence of water, never allowed the establishment of a very large agricultural community.

The construction of the current church used Roman walls, such as the one that still forms the triumphal arch today, and the passage from the nave to the main chapel indicates a very ancient foundation, possibly dating back to the beginning of the "Reconquista", at the end of the 9th century or beginning of the 10th century.
That’s it for today, tomorrow I’ll bring you a little more history.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
