Monsanto - Mountain Summit / Chapels & Anthropomorphic Graves - Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We return to Monsanto.
As I told you initially, the series Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon was partly filmed in this village.

Voltamos a Monsanto.
Como vos disse inicialmente, a série Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, foi filmada em parte nesta aldeia.
MIGUEL SAPOCHNIK, REALIZADOR"
It's nice to see that they also valued the village for this reason and to see the filming locations live and in color and the changes that were made to make the place fit into the series. Throughout the village until you reach the Castle we have signs (27 to be precise) that explain the history of the series, its characters and the changes made through special features. Where today we see villages in the series we see sea. I understand that they had to be carried out in order to be included, however I think they lost out!
According to what we read, the equipment had to be transported to the castle using Air Force helicopters.

The actors were welcomed by the locals. Every day they went up the hill to the Castle and we explained to our girl how it was done and what all these logistics involved. Like any tourist, we took the opportunity to explore the places they were and tried to recreate some of the photos we saw along the way :-) We don't publish those here but we leave a record of the place in its purest form so you can compare.

When we reach the foot of the mountain and before entering the castle we see the Chapel of São Miguel, which was the point of origin of the medieval colonization of Monsanto. The chapel has a single nave and chancel, with a perfect arched portal on the facade.
Right next door we find several graves. Believe it or not, this causes a lot of confusion for our daughter, so we don't dwell much on the subject.

The heat was already felt but the signs continued to indicate more places and we really wanted to explore this. With the promise that we would let her watch some parts of the series (but very well selected beforehand) she resigned herself and continued along the trail.
We arrived at the Chapel of São João and let me tell you.... What a view! Here it felt like we were in a movie scene. We were alone and took the opportunity to absorb all the beauty and energy of this place. We sat there for a while, absorbing all the good things this country has to offer.

It's amazing how often we look outside for what we have inside. I love watching documentaries about all the places in the world, but there is no greater truth than the one that says "There's nothing like coming home."
In the ruins of the chapel of S. João, which are located in a rocky corner on the east side of the castle, few remains remain.

16th-century tiles in the rubble indicate its existence at that time, and 18th-century documents suggest it was still in use. The remaining walls reveal a recently inaccurately reconstructed triumphal arch. Currently, it is an excellent viewpoint to enjoy the landscape, including Castelo Branco and its surroundings.
I'll be back tomorrow with more about the history of Monsanto!

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
