Monsanto - Historic Village (S.Salvador Church) / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Igreja Matriz de S. Salvador.jpg

As I told you in a previous post, we were lucky enough to stay in a little house right in the center of Monsanto.
Right here we can find the Church of São Salvador, which was built to replace the Chapel of São Miguel do Castelo. It was always closed on the days we were there and we never managed to visit the inside.
It seems that the number of churches that are closed today is beginning to recur, perhaps due to the lack of someone to take care of them. On every street there is something to see.

PT

A store caught my interest with its hats hanging as an exhibition. We later discovered that in addition to the store, the owner rented suites and her guests received a discount if they purchased a piece.
If we go down the street we will come to a bistro "Monsanto Café Bistrô" which is located in a square with a wonderful view.
The parking lot and viewpoint at the entrance to the village is called Largo do Baluarte, or Baluarto, in the popular way.

However, this platform does not appear to be a true bastion, as, even though it has angular elements at the ends, it does not have the polygonal shape typical of these defense structures. It appears to be a solution inspired by military architecture, but without historical veracity, despite the name. It may just be a souvenir of a fire platform used during an episode in one of the Peninsular Wars in the 19th century.
All the buses that bring tourists to visit the village park here.

Continuing the descent and as I told you previously, we already have some population settled on the plain.
Here we find the post office, the GNR, pharmacy and a square where elderly people spend their afternoon chatting and playing cards.

We don't see great luxuries around here, even in the few restaurants we find.
That same day, we went to the terrace and I noticed a huge statue that is hidden by the houses so you don't see it at first. A tribute to Our Lady of Fátima and the three little shepherds!
The village invites us to disconnect and enjoy nature. Learning about our history and exploring every corner that has been reserved for us.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

Those who pass by us do not go alone. They leave a bit of themselves, taking a piece of us."
