Historical Village / Sortelha - Sabugal - Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Historical Village.jpg

We went to one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal.
I confess that it is increasingly difficult to choose one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal. We have explored the north of Portugal a lot. The center already has some visitors too and it still doesn't do the South. I've already discovered some in the Algarve that I would really like to visit and that from what I see remind me of Greece. I hope these are coming soon too.

Today I introduce you to Sortelha! It's a wonderful village that left me in love perhaps with its 800 years of history. I would like to come back here when everything was in full operation to see a different dynamic, but seeing it this way, with this peace, allowed us to explore its corners without much of a rush! As soon as we arrive we see a large door that invites us to enter. The entire village is protected by a wall and the path to get there is quite winding, but it's worth all the curves we took just to enjoy this beauty.

Hoje apresento-vos a Sortelha!

We followed the rules and left the car parked outside. We enter the village through the main door where we are immediately greeted by a large square (Largo do Corro) with a centuries-old tree that provides plenty of shade and some benches to rest on. Right there I saw an elderly couple sharing a snack and admiring the view. I discreetly photographed them both and kept in mind that I hope one day to reach that age and be able to share moments like these with my husband and for there to be someone who sees us and thinks the same thing about them. It was a French couple and the lady had mobility difficulties and her husband helped with every step so that she could enjoy the walk as much as he did.

PT

Nearby we noticed a water well and the little one asked how to get the water out. We explained how in the past and even today, wells supplied water to houses and even entire villages, as I think was the case here.
We then decided to start exploring the alleys of Sortelha. As you can see from the photos, they were deserted, perhaps due to the heat and the fact that only 320 inhabitants lived here.
However, despite being inhabited, this village is known as the "Kingdom of Silence"

PT

As you can see, the houses are all restored, but commerce here is scarce and the only cafe we saw was closed.
Everything here is perfect, from the medieval sidewalk that we can see as soon as we enter, to the doors of the house, and the street lamps. It must be like a movie to see the village lit up when night falls.

We passed by a street that has its name indicated on a carved stone "Rua do Encontro". Everything in this village takes us back to the medieval era and makes us dream of princesses and princes, or at least it does for me! I still have a lot to show you and I'll be back tomorrow.
