Historic City Center - Guimarães / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
When walking through the streets of Guimarães, we feel history breathing through every corner, every building and every monument that we see in the historic center of this city so rich in traditions. We start the tour in the central square, a place where past and present meet in a unique way. The atmosphere was enveloped in a special magic, perhaps due to the proximity of Christmas, or due to the decorations that already adorned the storefronts, trees and streets.

Our attention was soon captured by the Torre de Menagem (Torre da Alfandega), one of the most emblematic symbols of Guimarães. Imposing, the tower seems to look at the city with a look of attentive surveillance. At the top there is an inscription, simple but powerful: "Portugal was born here". This phrase, engraved in stone, transports us to the decisive moment in the history of our country. It was there, in that same space, that the battle that would mark the beginning of our nation took place, when D. Afonso Henriques proclaimed the independence of Portugal, making Guimarães the cradle of our history.

Around the tower, the square vibrated. People strolled peacefully, mingling with tourists and locals, while the joyful sound of Christmas music echoed through the streets. The square was decorated with Christmas stars, trees and twinkling lights, creating a celebratory atmosphere that made any visitor's heart warm. The shops and cafes were full of typical products of the time, and the smell of roasted chestnuts hung in the air, inviting everyone to stop for a moment and enjoy the seasonal delights.

It was then that something unusual happened. At the end of the square, a deafening sound began to grow. Little by little, a crowd of people, of various ages, began to appear, with their bass drums. It was a parade, a rehearsal for the most special night of the year – Pinheiro night. The sound of bass drums echoed through the streets of Guimarães, creating a melody that seemed to communicate the energy of the entire city. Children and adults, all involved, played with enthusiasm, and their contagious rhythm was enough to make everyone present applaud, whether for the heritage of tradition or for the passion and joy that was felt in the air.

This parade, which would later be repeated on Pinheiro night, a tradition with more than 350 years, symbolizes the union of the city and the beginning of the Nicolina Festivities. Guimarães, known for its history, also knew how to integrate its modernity and contemporary experience, keeping, at the same time, the memory of the past alive. The Christmas spirit was present in every detail: in the laughter of the children running around the square, in the twinkling lights that decorated the streets and, of course, in the power of music and tradition that united everyone in a single embrace.

It was a tour that made me feel the true soul of Guimarães – a city that, through its stones, its streets and its traditions, preserves a rich and living history, but also knows how to celebrate modernity, celebration and joy.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

Every time I read your post, I feel so connected with the community. such a well written piece and a great lot of photographs. There is just so much beauty from the lit Christmas tree to the beige streets. The buildings filled with stones as bricks make it so filled with ancient history. 🏛
