Furdas & Pucilgas / Monsanto - Historic Village / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

furdas.jpg

Monsanto cannot be seen in a day.
It took us four days and I still get the feeling that we didn't see everything. In fact, we always come with this feeling... I don't know if you have this idea when you travel too.
On the way to the castle we found a place that we initially didn't understand what it was. As we entered from the back we passed by the sign that explained what it was about.

Previously scattered throughout the town, the furdas – pigsties – were gathered in vacant lots, like this one, for public health reasons, lined up on the banks of the path that goes up to the castle from the east. Most furdas follow the traditional model: a shelter, generally circular, with dry stone walls and covered by a false dome of overlapping stones, covered in earth, with a door that leads to a walled courtyard.

In the past, pigs were an important source of food, processed into sausages, and their slaughter, known locally as slaughter, was a significant domestic task that became an annual festive family ritual.

I remember very vaguely once when I was little I watched part of a massacre. I didn't witness the entire ritual so as not to be "offended". I remember seeing the pigs and then I remember seeing my aunts making sausages and drying them by the fire.

PT

We no longer saw pigs here, but we still saw chickens and chicken coops :-)
We continued to climb and we even had the opportunity to see these beautiful handmade pieces (dolls, balls...) All arranged and identified with values but with no one around!
I'll be back tomorrow :-)

PT

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
