Exploring Van: Akdamar Island & The Pearl Mullet Migration (Eng-Tr)

I am here with the third content of my Van trip. I stayed in Van for almost two months and took a lot of photos. I probably have enough photos in my gallery for the tenth of this series. Van has 13 districts. During the two months I was in Van, I visited 6 districts in total. In this article, I will tell you about two districts. Both of them are beautiful districts. Both districts have a coast to Lake Van. First, I will tell you about Gevaş district, then I will continue with Erciş district and end my sharing.

Van gezimin üçüncü içeriğiyle karşınızdayım. Van’da neredeyse iki ay kaldım ve bir sürü fotoğraf çektim. Muhtemelen bu serinin onuncusuna bile yetecek kadar fotoğraf galerimde var. Van'ın 13 ilçesi bulunuyor. Van'da bulunduğum iki ay boyunca toplamda 6 ilçeyi gezdim. Bu yazıda size iki ilçeden bahsedeceğim. İkisi de birbirinden güzel ilçeler. İki ilçenin de Van Gölüne kıyısı var. İlk olarak size Gevaş ilçesinden bahsedeceğim, daha sonra Erciş ilçesi ile devam edip paylaşımımı sonlandıracağım.

The First Town: Gevaş

I don't want to make my article boring by going too much into historical details here, but it would be impossible not to mention the natural beauties of Gevaş. This place stands out as one of the greenest and most vibrant districts of Van. It is almost like an escape point especially for those who love nature. When we look at the general structure of Van, the green nature of Gevaş is quite different and impressive compared to many other districts. Perhaps the most forested area among the districts is located in this region. Of course, when I say “forest”, don't think of huge seas of trees. Although there are not enough trees here to form a large and dense forest, it would not be wrong to say that Gevaş is much greener compared to other districts.

İlk ilçe: Gevaş

Burada tarihi detaylara fazla girerek yazımı sıkıcı hale getirmek istemiyorum, fakat Gevaş’ın doğal güzelliklerinden bahsetmeden geçmek de olmaz. Burası, Van’ın en yeşil ve en canlı ilçelerinden biri olarak öne çıkıyor. Özellikle doğayı sevenler için adeta bir kaçış noktası gibi. Van'ın genel yapısına baktığımızda, Gevaş'ın yeşil doğası, diğer birçok ilçeye kıyasla oldukça farklı ve etkileyici. Belki de ilçeler arasında en fazla ormanlık alan bu bölgede bulunuyor. Tabii, “orman” dediğimde aklınıza devasa ağaç denizleri gelmesin. Buradaki ağaçlar, büyük ve yoğun bir orman oluşturacak sayıda olmasa da, Gevaş’ın diğer ilçelerle kıyaslandığında çok daha yeşil olduğunu söylemek yanlış olmaz.

I had the opportunity to enjoy these natural beauties of Gevaş. Together with my girlfriend and her mother, we rented a cottage here for a night and enjoyed this beautiful nature. We sat on the terrace of the cottage and drank tea against the view of Lake Van. The tea cup photo I took to immortalize that moment was taken right on that terrace. One of the most enjoyable moments of that day was enjoying the meneme prepared by my friend. Not only the beauty of nature, but also that warm and sincere dinner has left a permanent place in our memories.

Gevaş'ın bu doğal güzelliklerinin keyfini çıkarma fırsatım oldu. Kız arkadaşım ve annesiyle birlikte, burada bir geceliğine yazlık kiraladık ve bu güzel doğanın tadını çıkardık. Yazlığın terasında oturup, Van Gölü manzarasına karşı çay içtik. O anı ölümsüzleştirmek için çektiğim çay bardağı fotoğrafı, tam da o terasta çekildi. O günün en keyifli anlarından biri de arkadaşımın hazırladığı menemenin tadını çıkarmak oldu. Yalnızca doğanın sunduğu güzellik değil, o sıcak ve samimi akşam yemeği de hafızalarımızda kalıcı bir yer edindi.

The view from the terrace was simply mesmerizing. In front of us was Lake Van and Akdamar Island, meeting the blue sky. This island attracts thousands of tourists every year and also houses an Armenian church that sheds light on Armenian history. The island fascinates people not only with its historical buildings but also with its nature and lake view. In the darkness of the night, with the moonlight shining on the lake, the view of the island became more beautiful.

Terasın manzarası ise tek kelimeyle büyüleyiciydi. Karşımızda, mavi gökyüzüyle buluşan Van Gölü ve Akdamar Adası uzanıyordu. Bu ada, her yıl binlerce turistin ilgisini çeken bir yer ve aynı zamanda üzerinde Ermeni tarihine ışık tutan bir Ermeni kilisesi barındırıyor. Ada, yalnızca tarihi yapılarıyla değil, doğası ve göl manzarasıyla da insanı büyülüyor. Gecenin karanlığında göle vuran ay ışığıyla birlikte adanın manzarası da ayrı bir güzellik kazanmıştı.

Although the one night we spent in Gevaş was short, we enjoyed this peaceful environment to the fullest. Even though we had to go back to the center of Van the next morning, the time we spent here remained in our memories. The nature, history and unique landscapes of Gevaş were enough to make this place unforgettable.

Gevaş’ta geçirdiğimiz bir gece kısa olmasına rağmen, bu huzurlu ortamın tadını doya doya çıkardık. Ertesi sabah Van merkeze geri dönmek zorunda kalsak da, burada geçirdiğimiz zaman hafızalarımızda yer etti. Gevaş’ın doğası, tarihi ve eşsiz manzaraları, burayı unutulmaz kılmaya yetti.

After the weather cooled down, my friend and I had the opportunity to go for a walk. We both watched Lake Van up close and enjoyed the nature, but some of the sights made us deeply sad. We came across images that did not befit Lake Van, Turkey's largest lake. Unfortunately, in some places there was garbage thrown on the shore of the lake. It is really thought-provoking that people remain insensitive to such a valuable natural beauty. It is as if we do not appreciate something until we lose it. Seeing these piles of garbage reminded us once again that more awareness should be raised for the protection of the lake. This beauty of Lake Van should be protected as it deserves.

Hava serinledikten sonra arkadaşımla biraz yürüyüşe çıkma fırsatı bulduk. Hem Van Gölü'nü yakından seyrettik hem de doğanın tadını çıkardık. Fakat bazı manzaralar bizi derinden üzdü. Türkiye'nin en büyük gölü olan Van Gölü'ne yakışmayan görüntülerle karşılaştık. Ne yazık ki, bazı yerlerde gölün kıyısına atılmış çöpler vardı. İnsanların böylesine değerli bir doğal güzelliğe karşı duyarsız kalması gerçekten düşündürücü. Sanki bir şeyi kaybetmeden kıymetini anlamıyoruz. Bu çöp yığınlarını görmek, gölün korunması için daha fazla farkındalık yaratılması gerektiğini bize bir kez daha hatırlattı. Van Gölü'nün bu güzelliği hak ettiği gibi korunmalı.

The Second Town: Erciş

My next stop is Erciş, one of the beautiful districts of Van. This district has its own beauties and the reason we came here is to see the famous fish. In the first photo, you may have noticed that I have a tea cup in my hand. You can see that I am fond of tea. But the real reason we came to Erciş is the fish. In the unique ecosystem of Lake Van, there is a fish species that lives only in this lake: Pearl Mullet. The hunting of this delicious fish is forbidden in certain periods. This ban coincides with the spawning period of the fish. We came to Erciş during this period to observe this miraculous moment.

İkinci ilçe: Erciş

Sıradaki durağım Van’ın güzel ilçelerinden biri olan Erciş. Bu ilçenin de kendine has güzellikleri var ve buraya gelme sebebimiz ise meşhur balıkları görmek. İlk fotoğrafta yine elimde bir çay bardağı var, fark etmişsinizdir. Çaya olan düşkünlüğüm buradan da anlaşılıyor. Ancak Erciş’e gelmemizin asıl nedeni balıklar. Van Gölü'nün eşsiz ekosisteminde sadece bu gölde yaşayan bir balık türü var: İnci Kefali. Oldukça lezzetli olan bu balığın avlanması ise belirli dönemlerde yasak. Bu yasak, balıkların yumurtlama dönemlerine denk geliyor. Biz de tam bu dönemde, bu mucizevi anı gözlemlemek için Erciş’e geldik.

In order to lay their eggs safely, Pearl Mullet make a difficult migration across the water. Seeing this migration is like watching a wonderful show presented by nature. This adventure of the fish moving against the flow of the water, almost as if dancing, can be observed in many places in the region. However, Erciş is one of the places where this migration is most clearly seen. We were there at the best time to watch the migration and we saw a truly mesmerizing view.

İnci Kefalleri, yumurtalarını güvenli bir şekilde bırakabilmek için suyun tersine doğru, zorlu bir göç gerçekleştiriyor. Bu göçü görmek, doğanın sunduğu harika bir gösteriyi izlemek gibi. Suyun akışına karşı, adeta dans edercesine ilerleyen balıkların bu serüveni, bölgedeki birçok yerde gözlemlenebiliyor. Ancak Erciş, bu göçün en net şekilde görüldüğü noktalardan biri. Göçü izlemek için en uygun zamanda oradaydık ve gerçekten büyüleyici bir manzarayla karşılaştık.

During this migration, not only us but also the seagulls get their share of this natural phenomenon. Fish migration is also a very fertile period for seagulls. Hundreds of seagulls soar along the lake shore to catch the migrating fish. It was really wonderful to observe this living ecosystem and witness the cycle of nature. While watching the fish struggle against the current, it was very impressive to see the acrobatic movements of the seagulls in the sky.

Bu göç sırasında sadece biz değil, martılar da bu doğa olayından nasibini alıyor. Balıkların göçü, martılar için de oldukça bereketli bir dönem. Yüzlerce martı, göç eden balıkları yakalamak için göl kıyısında süzülüyor. Bu canlı ekosistemi gözlemlemek, doğanın döngüsüne tanıklık etmek gerçekten harikaydı. Bir yandan balıkların akıntıya karşı olan mücadelesini izlerken, diğer yandan martıların gökyüzündeki akrobatik hareketlerini görmek çok etkileyiciydi.

This day we spent in Erciş was not limited to just watching nature. We stayed there throughout the day and had a pleasant picnic around the lake and the stream. The fresh air by the lake, the natural beauty of the surroundings and this miraculous migration made our time in Erciş very special. The walk we took around the stream was a moment of peace. After witnessing all these natural wonders, on our way home in the evening, we felt both the happiness of having spent a day full of the wonders of nature and the peace of remembering the beauties of Erciş.

Erciş’te geçirdiğimiz bu gün, sadece doğayı izlemekle sınırlı kalmadı. Gün boyunca orada kaldık ve gölün, derenin etrafında keyifli bir piknik yaptık. Göl kenarındaki temiz hava, çevredeki doğal güzellikler ve bu mucizevi göç ile Erciş'te geçirdiğimiz vakit çok özeldi. Derenin etrafında yaptığımız yürüyüş de tam bir huzur anıydı. Tüm bu doğa harikalarına tanıklık ettikten sonra, akşamüstü eve dönerken hem doğanın mucizeleriyle dolu bir gün geçirmiş olmanın mutluluğunu hem de Erciş’in sunduğu güzellikleri hafızamıza kazımanın huzurunu yaşadık.

I will never forget this pleasant day we spent in Erciş. Witnessing these rare moments offered by nature, especially watching the migration of the Pearl Mullet, reinforced my love for this region once again. Van and its surroundings, with its unique beauties in every season, is a must-see for everyone who loves nature.

Erciş’te geçirdiğimiz bu keyifli günü hiçbir zaman unutmayacağım. Doğanın sunduğu bu nadir anlara tanıklık etmek, özellikle de İnci Kefali’nin göçünü izlemek, bu bölgeye olan sevgimi bir kez daha pekiştirdi. Her mevsim kendine has güzellikleri olan Van ve çevresi, doğayı seven herkesin mutlaka görmesi gereken bir yer.
