Unforgettable experience
Oh! Yes! I'm going to rest a little bit and also have some fun.
This was what came to mind after stepping out of the examination hall. I decided to go to my class to rest a bit before my dad comes and picks me and my sibling home.
While putting my head on the school desk, the school security came in and said, My daddy is around, waiting for me outside.
I was very excited, so I jumped into his car after greeting him.
While driving home, I asked him
“Dad, we are done with our exam; where am I going to spend my holiday?”
He looked at me with a smiling face and said, “I know. Would you like to go to grandma's place for your summer holiday?”.
I replied, “Okay, sir.”
After some days, my dad finally took me to Grandma's place (my dad mother's place). Getting there, I observed that the house had been renovated and everywhere looked tidy. My grandma was thrilled for me.
“See my baby, oh, she's now grown and a big girl already.” She started hailing me with her dialect while my head got swollen, and I gave her a big hug. Then she introduced me to Aunty Folake, who was her housekeeper.
Aunty Folake smiled at me and then showed me my room. Getting to the room, I was tired, so I decided to lay down on the bed because the journey to Grandma's place was stressful.
Some hours later, my aunt Folake came to the room and said, “Grace, food is ready. Come and join your dad to eat in the dining room. I felt so relieved when I had food ready. I quickly had my bath, changed my dress, and rushed down to the dining room. Getting there, I decided to look at Aunty Folake very well. Her face was not attractive at all.
My dad said to me, “My dear, eat your food.”
While eating, I observed that the rice did not have a nice taste, but I managed to finish it.
I went back to my room to rest, finally slept off.
The morning appears to be bright with a smiling sun shining above in the sky, the morning bed woke me up with its morning sound. I got up, did my morning devotion, and got to the parlor. I saw Aunty Folake cleaning the parlor while my dad and grandma were discussing. Likewise, I walked to them and greeted them in a matured way.
My dad said, “My dear, I will be going back to Lagos this morning. Enjoy your holiday with grandma. Aunty Folake is there for anything you want me to help you out with.
I decided to join Aunty Folake in the kitchen. I greeted her and asked what you were preparing for breakfast, and she said yam porridge.
“Is there anything to help you out here?” I asked.
She replied to me with a scarcity smile on her face and said, “Help me to wash the dirty dishes over there.”.
“The plates are seemingly too much,” I ask her.
“Why is it like this? She just snubbed me with a mere smile.
I washed the plates, swept the kitchen, and cleaned the sink after washing the plates.
Later, in the evening, Grandma decided to take me along to the market to get some food items. Getting to the market, the sun was harsh and hot, but still, grandma spent so much time in the market. I got so exhausted because I had to carry a heavy load.
Getting home, I rushed to my room to rest, but grandma called me back to the kitchen to come and learn how to cook one of the traditional meals that is being prepared with water yam. I felt so reluctant to go at first, but I ended up moving to the kitchen with low, steady feet just to let Grandma know that I'm tired.
“I know you're tired, but you just have to come look at the way I'm preparing this meal for you.”
After she prepared the meal, we both sat at the dinner table to eat.
At first, the face of the food looked somehow to me; she said, “Don't you like the way it looks?”
I replied, “No.”
I tasted one spoon of the food; the taste was just too problematic for me to eat. Then I said, “Granny, I can't eat it again”.
“After spending much time in the kitchen, just to prepare this to welcome you, you chose not to eat it right?”
Grandma forced me to eat the food that was against my wishes. I felt so bad and unhappy that day.
After the meal, I went to my room, picked up my phone, and narrated what had happened to my mom.
Then she said, “My daughter, you just have to be yourself; learn to accept the type of meal given to you.”
My mom sang one of her favorite songs for me, just to calm me down.
After hearing the sound, I felt relieved, and I slept.
The time spent at Grandma's place always makes me remember my mother's house, where I will be given the type of meal I want.
Generally, at my mom's place, I do the types of housework that require strength, but at Grandma's place, I will still do the chores that are beyond my capabilities.
Grandma will say that it is training.
When my dad finally came to pick me up, I was thrilled to return to my mother's house.
Getting home, I ended up feeling sick for a few days before going back to school.
My mom was not happy to see her daughter looking slim because I didn't have enough time to rest.
Even since then, I have decided not to go to Grandma's place for a holiday.
