Foodborne Illnesses and Meat Food Poisoning
Hamburger!!!, is very common in America just like the name Apple. Some people just have one to work daily and some would have it 3 times daily not minding the calories it contains but I would say that on average in so many countries, people eat 3 a week. At a point in time, meats were fully from the farm, and we all complained about how animal husbandry was a negative effect on our planet as it was responsible for climate changes and so on but in recent times, meats for burgers are gotten from plants but then some meats are still gotten from factories. Studies have shown that this industrialized meat has given room for bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli 0517:H7, and Campylobacter.
According to an article, meat and poultry food which includes beef, pork, poultry, and other types of meat accounts for about 22% of illnesses and 29% of deaths in the United States. I can imagine how terrible the statistics would be in poor countries. These illnesses are a result of bacteria found in the meat. I have a friend who would always have food poisoning after eating a chicken from an eatery in my area. She loves chicken pie and would order the pie but didn't notice her continuous stomach pain was from the chicken pie because she would always eat other things along with it, then she realized one day after she ate the chicken, found herself at the hospital 2 consecutive days for food poisoning from only one food she ate which was the pie.
While food poisoning might look like a very simple thing to the ear, it isn't. Having children suffer from the poison of E. coli O517:H7 can be very devastating if not quickly handled. You can see them have diarrheal illness followed by systemic complications such as failure of the kidney, the heart, the brain, and so on. This is also possible in adults but it becomes painful when children have to suffer for what they do not even understand or have a fault in. As little as 2 or 3 E. coli O517:H7 bacteria is enough to cause disease and it is enough to cause fatality.
Cattles have E.coli in their guts and E. coli O517:H7 is one. The fact that farmers now feed their cattles with antibiotics would mean that the bacteria will be resistant to the drug over time, causing them to be resistant in humand when they infect. While the farm can be ab origin of the problem, the assenbly line is another place were food poisoning can begin. The conditions in the packing and assembly line matters, also if the process of getting the meat cleaned isn't clean enough, then there can be contamination from one dead animal to the other. In the case of hamburgers and other food that requires the meat to the crushed and mixed, then the crushing line can also be another place where contamination can occur.
Let's not forget that cattle can still be responsible for the disease known as Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy) which can affect humans. Which is a neurologic diseases which affects cows causing them to change their mood and have increased aggression. It is caused by prion which is self replicating. The variant that affects humans is the Variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease whichcan lead to brain degeneration, trembling, dementia, and coma.
What we eat matters a lot, and although beef is very impotant, it is one major cause offood poisoning. It is very funny how a lot of people feel that they cannot have foodborne illnesses but the truth is millions of people come down with foodborne illnesses every year. Consumption of food contaminated foods can surely lead to food poisoning and other foodborne diseases. Salmollena, E.coli, Listeria,Norovirus, Toxoplasma Gondii, and so on. Foodborne illnesses can be reduced by proper processing of the food such as pasteurization, proper referigeration and freezing, hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP), and so on.
