Without Losing Sight Of

Some of the billionaires that I have heard speak on podcasts like Deep Dive by Ali Abdaal usually mention something in particular about their work lives that often strikes me. It baffles me most times, and although I imagine it's real and possible, I wonder how and when I would actually get to say the same for myself, because it's not unreal and I desire it.

When I was on my second internship at the university, I was fortunate to work with an automation academy. It was a reputable one that only handed out very few slots at that time. On getting the spot, I was excited to resume. I was going to work for six days of the week, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. It seemed like no problem to me at that time until a few weeks in.

The working hours were alright for me. The pay wasn't fantastic, but I was learning what people paid tons of money to get and was content. What I didn't factor in were the circumstances I would regularly find myself in, like dealing with road traffic every morning and evening, and the shift in my lifestyle.

Going to work on Saturdays and having only Sundays off wasn't convenient. It became a challenge to do the other things that were important to me. I had a great work relationship with my colleagues and boss, so I always looked forward to another day there at work, but I felt myself slowly drifting away from some things that truly mattered to me.

Eventually, I graduated from the academy, and after a series of enlightenments afterwards, I realized a few things about myself with time. A, I lean more towards remote jobs than being on the field or in the in the office. B, I shouldn't be working for every minute of my life, and most certainly not in unhealthy ways.

Fast forward to a few years later, and I began to teach physics at a secondary school for my national service year. Unlike how it should be, I really only went to work when I had to teach or perform my duty as the liaison officer for my colleagues. I should have been at work during the school hours every day, but the zero pay was discouraging.

Because I didn't have to be at work so much every day, I had a lot more time to do some of the other things that were also important to me. I think that in this sense, it applies to businesses as well.

"I have not worked a single Friday for many years now," one of the billionaires said on the Deep Dive podcast. That struck me. He had built something for himself that enabled him to be in more control of his time, earned him a truckload of money, and allowed him to do things like spend more time with his family.

How to get there, I am not sure. What I am certain about is that if I can reduce my work time and days, it would be splendid and allow me to find it easier to maintain work-life balance regularly.

Putting the community prompt into perspective, with only four days of work, including extended work hours, I could do alright as long as I get one more day without work. The weekends seem like they aren't enough these days anyway. And then I would spend time on more things that excited me as well. I mean, if the work isn't already laborious, you know...

How can I really get here 💭🤔
I think we should all be working hard towards this kind of lifestyle because who doesn't love something like this? The issue of breaking down due to work stress will be a thing of the past, and yet, your have secured a sustainable source of income for you and your family, giving you an opportunity to spend quality time with family too without loosing anything

Personally, I wouldn't want extra work hours per day. I don't want to imagine how exhausted I will be. Infact falling sick will be inevitable. 9 to 5 is already exhausting not to talk of adding extra hours. Even if I am being paid per hourly, I wouldn't go for it for the sake of my well being.

So Nkem too likes soft life. 🤓

Truth is, I wish I knew the answer too. I'm hoping something clicks someday - for all of us. And then be more in control of our time.

Thank you, Nkem.

Chai this got me smiling Jay. I mean who doesn't want the soft life?

If the days are to be reduced the the time should not be increased as well. The normal regular hours are ok for four working days o.

To me it's just mentality and growth honestly. If you remember most grapevine always state companies are looking for young people most times unmarried for certain positions the reason why is they don't really mind the hours just the pay and excitement that's why most factory and customer care office employs young adults.

The honest truth is the more relaxed you are the more chances of growth to occur, time management is key in both situations which in my personal opinion is the same situation just different perspective, if you are a billionaire with assets or an employee with just your job your all going to work but the key difference is one seems to feel like he can alter his timing freely than the other which is somewhat true and somewhat false.

An elaboration
The billionaire with assets honestly has more work as a supervisor as his work is dynamic and requires him to be updated and the workers work is less dynamic which brings about easy areas to seek updates the difference here is, the billionaire collects the updates assembled by top ranking employees to make decisions which involves more assembling and creating which occurs at every step even with employees but is more relaxed doing so while employees feel like they aren't values enough because of their pay that's really just the problem.

In my closure, I do recognize there might be extreme cases not recognized in my opinion which I will like to discuss as you share, thanks for your opinion on this topic.

When you put it that way, it makes being a billionaire some type of work on its own. it does make sense that people way at the top are paid even more and could have more flexibility in their hands as they are mostly decision makers, which is—ironic to their flexibility—a rather less streamlined job compared to employees. It makes me wonder...would you rather own a business or work for a business?

I would own one, based on my personality trait which is a gift to me I love adventure and leading while seeking and recognizing value, so owning a business seems more appealing than being employed, being an employee in my opinion limits your growth to organization of work flow and an area of life when there's more to see, learn and grow.
