Wahala For Femi || Living With A Stereotypical Name
If you are Nigerian, that's great. If you are one, however, and you bear a stereotypical name, then that may not be so great. There are many, but the most popular, based on Twitter polls, lol, is Femi. But it's not for desirable reasones. And guess what?? That's my first name!
Meanwhile, Wahala just means "Problem." It's a Nigerian Slang thingy...
Okay, okay, I am not sure what kind of name is meant to be the first name, if it's meant to be your name in your dialect or just any you'd prefer to be called. Google gets me confused everytime I try - but that's not why we are here. We are here for how the stereotypical name affects me and just why it is stereotypical name. But first, let's run a little history from my perspective.
Many people now know me as Joseph. However, this was not the case many years ago, when I was still a child. Wait, am I not still someone's child? 🤔💭 I used to be called a different name, Femi, and Joseph was not really known by people. I swapped them for reasons that were maybe childish, but were justifiable, based on my feelings anyway.
You see, Femi is just a short form of the Yoruba name Oluwafemi, meaning God loves me. Further disecting it, Oluwa means "God", and then Femi would be "love me." Now when you say Femi alone, it means a completely different thing. And as a kid then, I didn't fancy the attraction it brought.
I have always been "the cute boy" every where and every time, and it has always been pretty much out of the norms for me to go unnoticed. This isn't me being vain, please. So when I was in secondary school (junior high school), I always got the attention, and even more and more because of my name, Femi. Or was it all in my head? I don't think so...
How?...you may wonder. Femi has always been one of the most popular Yoruba names, so much so that any one from any tribe can immediately tell that one is Yoruba. But it somes with its caveats. As a kid, whenever I told anyone that my name is Femi, the first thing they say is Àwọn tó ń jẹ́ Femi máa ń like obìnrin (Those that bear Femi usually like women). And my response was usually "Ah ahnn, me I don't like girls o" (what?? I don't like girls), and then they'd say to me "gbenu so un" (shut your mouth). Little did I know that was just the beginning... The reality, however, was that girls in my school then actually liked me; some, anyway...I remember physically fighting a girl then, but that's a story for another day. And then, back at school, some girls would always tease me with my name. "Fe mi" could also mean "marry me." So they'd be like, "Femi, femi nau." This directly translates to "Femi, please marry me." And this would make me cringe so much, so much so that I often avoided some of these girls as that always made me feel embarrassed as people often laughed at it all. So I vowed that if I ever made it out alive from that school that I'd use "Joseph" as my first name instead. Again, I was just a kid, so put that judgemental face somewhere else. Please 🥺 Moving forward... When the opportunity came for me to change school came, I made sure to follow on my vow; to tell people that my name is Joseph, rather than Oluwafemi. But I guess it was pointless anyway as I landed in a boys school. Nobody cared about me and my fancy name. How fascinating! But in the long run, it kind of paid off. You know why? Because there was a much greater stereotype around the name Femi ahead of me. Well, it was still centered around women. But now, I have more peace than I would have had if I had still gone about telling people that my name is Oluwafemi. Oh, and by the way, that's how my username came about. Olujay (Oluwafemi Joseph). It was coined by my very own amazing mother. Why? Well, she didn't want people stealing my clothes in the new school so she printed Olujay on all my things...literally everything! And so, everyone in school just called me that as it was boldly written on my shirts, trousers, and bedspreads. Aren't mothers amazing?? But I digress... If you have seen those memes about Femi being the most dangerous type of guys in Nigeria then you know exactly what I am about to talk about. huhh?...aboutta whattabout? Hmmm...but how do I continue without coming off condescending? Let's give it a try. I don't know the type of Femi some ladies have met, but I am assuming they have had their hearts ripped apart by these species. And you know what's crazier? It seems to be that the majority of women that have being in relationships with this particular genre of a man have the same notion about them. So whenever I do tell anyone my name is actually Femi, they give this look that practically says "Fear Femi!!"...if they don't say it with their lips. And when I tell them that I am a good boy, they'd respond with "Haaa...that's how it used to start oh" On the contrary, I am a very good boy. If you give your heart to me, I'll carry it like an egg; with tenderness and care. Like this flower... For this stereotype around the name Femi, I mention my name with utmost care where ever I go. Are there other stereotypes you have heard about the name Femi? Or are there actual experiences that you have with people bearing Femi? Or just go on to share the stereotypical names you know and their stereotypes. Let us know and let's catch cruise today. TGIF!
You want some?
See what I mean?
Shall I proceed?
My name has an actual meaning and it carries weight. I am not in any way cringy over my name as I actually do love it and bear it with pride and love.
PS: Only the parts of this story that are true are actually true. The rest are fables. 🤡

Wait! Before I continue, I want that lacasera drink.... Who still drinks that? 😬
But I have an uncle named Oluwafemi.... He is married to my Aunt and so far have been the best father to two young boys 🥰🥰
Perhaps you would be too 😊😌😌
Sincerely, I hate to be stereotyped when you haven't gotten a glimpse of who I am by moving close to me and having a taste of my attitude. Well, I don't mind them and would let them say whatever they want to keep saying. It's their mouth and not mine.
Looking closely, the guy resemble @starstrings01
Very well. The resemblance is too much and I have known this for a while especially the day I saw a post where both of them were playing on guitar.
LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they better confess that they are siblings Lol 🤣🤣
Didn’t know it was OLUJAY post. Olujay is my cousin by the way 😉.

That lacasera drink caught me by surprise too. I saw it when I wanted to get some donuts and then lo and behold...I instantly got one to reminisce on how it always made me feel.
Now, you are talking. This is the Femi that I know. Shey you see that we can be super responsible?
I also do not like that stereotyping that people do when they first meet me. Like, try to figure out that I am actually a funny person. Try to know me instead. But people will always be people.
I will come back to comment lolz 😂🤣🤣 let me process what I read well lolz 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

I get a lot of Twitter/IG posts about how "demonic" Femis can be. I don't know how that applies to me, but I get them anyway. 😂😭
B'oya I go kuku marry all of them join😄
Look at this one lolz 😂🤣, Fe gbo gbo wan Po lolz 😂🤣🤣
Honestly, Nigeria and cruise can’t be separated😹😹. Imagine what they have done to ‘precious’
But those Femiiiiiiii ehn😹.. let me not even start, I’ll like to believe you are an exception.
How mothers are amazing o 🥺😭😭… look at this
You went to Boarding school?
Yeah he did went to boarding school. But now, there are a lot of ladies chasing him in the University...
@starstrings01 If ladies are chasing him around then ladies will also not be far from you.
Nah. They are far from me. They don’t like me because I frown too much and I am strict 😅😂
You don't look like someone that frown... but maybe serious...
Sounds like you are doing that on purpose.. because if not, hehe.. many girls will be so charmed by you. Yeah. I feel you …😹👌
😂😂
Nigerians are now normally unserious. Everything is "cruise" for them.
I am not sure I have heard much about the name Precious. Tell me one.
The ones for Femi have actually gone overboard. But I sure am an exception. You want to gimme your heart for a try? I'll take good care of it.
Yes yes, I went to a boarding school for SSS1-SSS3; a military one, in fact.
Honestly 😹.
Lowkey. Precious is the female version of Femi. They even made a tiktok challenge or so, where the girl tell a guy her name is precious and you will hear "Run" 😹😹
An exception, huh, you sure? Lol. I am not much of a risk taker 😹
I don’t really like boarding school tho. I hope you enjoyed your stay. Omo… I’ll be sure not to step on your toes. Because…..
Oh, really??😂😂
I haven't found those tiktok videos yet. They'd sure be hilarious.
Living itself is a risk that we all take.
I didn't enjoy being in a military school. I hated most days.
Sure. It is really funny.
Lol… I’ll rather not take that particular risk 😹
I really do not like boarding school in general. I have heard a lot experience which I don’t even want to experience 😫… but at least you can now stand in a ‘war front’..😂
See as you dey fear Femi...😅
Which war front??😂 I cannot even fight to save my own life.
Boarding school is a place where deep memories are formed. I went to one that I didn't really like, but I am glad I did attend. I am a much better person than I could have been if I had not attended.
'Femi' has always been tagged the names of those famous Yoruba demons, you get. 😂 And I don't know how people conclude on the spot really.
As long as you have promised to treat my heart like an egg, you're a really nice guy. 🥺
You cannot spell "Yoruba demon" without "Femi." It can never be complete sehhh...
Just bring your heart and you'll see how I'll take good care of it.
😂. I'm on my way.
As much as there is a stereotype with the name FEMI... There is also with Emmanuel.
I saw a video where they were asking who broke your heart the most and Emmanuel was the most mentioned name.
One girl even said she was
disvirgineddeflowered by Emmanuel.I think I know a certain Emmanuel that may fit into this category you speak of. Ladies follow him upandan in my Church.
Emmanuel bass?
No, sir. 😄
Hehe... I know what it feels like to be stereotyped over your name. Eventually, either you get used to it and it no longer disturbs you, or you change it. You find a way to adapt nonetheless.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
It actually never bothers me. I do find them funny and they kind of make conversations with new people fun from the start; I leverage it most times.

Haaa...😂
See what I am saying?? Wahala for Femi
Have you had a personal experience with Femi before?
You made me laugh and honestly, it is the same case for the Femi's. I remembered a video of a lady telling other ladies to be careful of guys named Femi because they are flirts.
Your case is different because you look good plus the name, I wonder what some girls would have said to your face just because you bear Femi
You see what I am saying!😅 And that isn't so for all of us.
You don't want to know what I have heard with my two ears...😂
Thank you for reading, man. I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks for sharing as well, have a great weekend.
