MOVIE REVIEW: The Gray Man || Not Your Regular Assasin [ENG-ESP]

The Gray Man is a 2022 American action movie, directed by the Russo brothers. It is a movie based on a 2009 novel by Mark Greaney of the same name. It features popular faces in the film industry, such as Ryan Gosling, Chris Adams, and Regé-Jean Page.

I had no idea it had just been released the previous week, as I had been off seeing movies for a while. I was just on the hunt for films to see this week and talk about when I found "The Gray Man" on the streaming service, Netflix. I downloaded the ones I had picked on a different device, but I eventually saw this film on a bigger screen with a friend.

I normally would see the trailer before actually checking it out, but I just skipped it and still have not seen it. I had only read the little insufficient description at the bottom of its title and decided to go with it since the title sounded cool and promising. And more so, I had been disappointed by the recent action films I had seen, so I figured I would cut the film genre some slack and give it another try.

Right from the beginning of the scene, I began to have a sense of how the movie was going to play out. I felt it was going to have a similar storyline to what I had seen in movies such as "Six Underground". But in the end, it turned out to be quite different, and I just knew I had to tell you about this one.

Let's talk about the movie a little before I begin sharing my thoughts and opinions about this film.

A convicted murderer is visited in prison by a senior CIA official and is offered his freedom in exchange for some service in the CIA. He would be trained as an assasin for the organization and would exist "in the gray" indefinitely. In the gray, it would mean that he would live an anonymous life. He agrees, and he is given the codename, Sierra Six.

Eighteen years later, Six has now become proficient at his job, probably the best. He is on a mission in Bangkok to assasinate a target, but what he finds contradicts what he has always known about the Sierra program and the people he works for. He realizes he is in grave danger and chooses to not report back and disappears. His superiors realise their schemes have been discovered and may be compromised if they do not catch him.

It now becomes a wild goose chase for Six as his superiors employ the services of a former colleague of Six, Lloyd, whose unethical methods are known to defy the protocols of the CIA. Lloyd puts a bounty on Six and deplys everything in his arsenal against Six. Six is now on the run for his life, and that should not be a problem for him considering his level of skills, but now has the life of a child dependent on him.

If I had been Six, I would rather have stayed in prison and done my time rather than be a serial killer who practically has to sleep with one eye open. But I guess if I had been Six, we definitely would not have had this action thriller movie that made it to the top ten on the streaming service, Netflix.

The story portrays how certain organizations (I am trying to keep my head safe) may actually need to get their hands dirty sometimes to deal with really terrible and difficult criminals in ways "protocols" would not allow them to, for the sole purpose of apprehending the criminal quicker. But sometimes, which is always the case with these types of situations, they go sideways. The individuals they select for their dirty jobs will always be disposable, and they have to watch their own backs and keep their heads by themselves.

But this is a type of story that has been seen over and over again in the film industry. And there really is nothing wrong with such a storyline. What matters is the nuances in delivering the movie. I did not like the fact that some of the things I saw had already been predicted by myself, but the film managed to deliver itself with compensating twists that made me feel like "meh, the cliche story can slide".

Let us be a little apecific, shall we? I really do not want to deliver to you a shallow depth of my thoughts, as that is the main purpose of this review.

I have probably made it clear how the whole story was somewhat predictable, but it is how I perceived the development that I'll be sharing now.

The story started on a very subtle note and progressed gradually into really engaging and entertaining scenes. Some filmmakers develop films in a way that they kind of stall till they get to the particular action that they want to center the film upon, but that was not the case with this film. The first few scenes were engaging, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Every single action scene in this movie was very intriguing and entertaining to me.

As much as I thought I had a feeling of how it would all go, it, however, did not end how it should have, in my opinion. When you are leading your audience to a certain form of conclusion, it is okay to give an unexpected twist, but it is not okay to come to a somewhat vague resolution. I thought there was going to be a big reveal at the end about something, but that was not the case. Rather, they decided to add to the confusion on the ground.

My immediate hypothesis was that they were probably intending to birth a sequel. And that should be okay, but at least they should have given answers to the "only" question they had instilled in the audience, and maybe left some post-credit scene that would raise another burning question and give a little impression that a sequel is coming. Instead, they left a note that seemed to be sitting on the fence. The closure just did not seem substantial enough to entice one to want a sequel. But of course, I did see many good sides to this film.

Now this is the best part about the movie, for me. As important as it is to have the storyline right, you can not just deal with the cinimatography in any way. Or else you would have a good story that would look terrible, practically.

I kept on saying to my friend that I so loved the camera angles and dynamics employed in the film. It may or may not have been easy to do (I doubt that), but they went a long way in making the film engaging.

The visual effects used in this film are also something to applaud. It is very appealing to see the film industry grow into a stage where they can make films with appreciable qualities. Although some scenes had to be unnatural, as it is always the case with films of this genre, they were way less unrealistic than they could have been a decade ago.

This is an area you do not want to mess up as a filmmaker. This is because the actors are responsible for actually selling their characters to the audience. Without their excellence in performance, the film could easily have been detestable.

I did not really know Ryan Gosling before seeing this film, but I entirely loved his delivery. I feel there could have been a little more comedic element to his character, but I guess the directors really wanted Six the way they portrayed him. A professional actor like himself cannot afford to do less than what his reputation speaks of him, so he delivered with excellence yet again.

Chris Evans is an actor that I am beginning to love as I see him more on the screen. At first, I could not recognise him because he had a completely different personality displayed and his looks were entirely different from what I had always known him for. The ability to adopt different personalities is a virtue that not many actors can possess.

Another actor that I would like to commend is Dhanush. I had never seen him anywhere before, and I doubt he is new to the film industry. But he did amazingly well with his little role in the film. As a director, I would pick him if I were to be looking for an actor that would deliver a unique performance as a villian or any similar role.

Many times, action movies that are not thriller inclined have elements that are dead-right predictable, and this one was not an exception. Yet, this film managed to deliver really entertaining and exciting vibes that changed my mind about cliched storylines. Cliche storylines could be entertaining still, but it is the creativity and brilliance behind them that matters more.

If you are looking for an action-filled movie, you may want to go for this one. It satisfies the film's type of audience sufficiently. I know for sure that I am now interested in action films like this one.

Está protagonizada por rostros populares de la industria cinematográfica, como Ryan Gosling, Chris Adams y Regé-Jean Page.

No tenía ni idea de que se acababa de estrenar la semana anterior, ya que llevaba un tiempo sin ver películas. Estaba buscando películas para ver esta semana y hablar de ellas cuando encontré "The Gray Man" en el servicio de streaming, Netflix. Descargué las que había elegido en otro dispositivo, pero finalmente vi esta película en una pantalla más grande con un amigo.

Normalmente vería el tráiler antes de comprobarlo, pero me lo salté y aún no lo he visto. Sólo había leído la pequeña e insuficiente descripción al pie de su título y decidí ir con ella ya que el título sonaba genial y prometedor. Además, me habían decepcionado las últimas películas de acción que había visto, así que pensé que le daría una oportunidad al género cinematográfico y le daría otra oportunidad.

Desde el principio de la escena, empecé a tener una idea de cómo se iba a desarrollar la película. Sentí que iba a tener un argumento similar al que había visto en películas como "Six Underground". Pero al final resultó ser bastante diferente, y supe que tenía que hablarte de ella.

Hablemos un poco de la película antes de empezar a compartir mis pensamientos y opiniones sobre esta película.

Un asesino convicto recibe la visita en prisión de un alto cargo de la CIA y se le ofrece su libertad a cambio de algún servicio en la CIA. Sería entrenado como asesino para la organización y existiría "en el gris" indefinidamente. En el gris, significaría que viviría una vida anónima. Acepta, y se le da el nombre en clave, Sierra Six.

Dieciocho años después, Seis se ha convertido en un experto en su trabajo, probablemente el mejor. Está en una misión en Bangkok para asesinar a un objetivo, pero lo que encuentra contradice lo que siempre ha sabido sobre el programa Sierra y la gente para la que trabaja. Se da cuenta de que está en grave peligro y decide no informar y desaparecer. Sus superiores se dan cuenta de que sus planes han sido descubiertos y pueden verse comprometidos si no lo atrapan.

Ahora se convierte en una búsqueda inútil para Seis, ya que sus superiores emplean los servicios de un antiguo colega de Seis, Lloyd, cuyos métodos poco éticos son conocidos por desafiar los protocolos de la CIA. Lloyd pone una recompensa por Seis y despliega todo su arsenal contra Seis. Seis está ahora huyendo por su vida, lo que no debería ser un problema para él teniendo en cuenta su nivel de habilidades, pero ahora tiene la vida de un niño que depende de él.

Si yo hubiera sido Seis, habría preferido quedarme en la cárcel y cumplir mi condena en lugar de ser un asesino en serie que prácticamente tiene que dormir con un ojo abierto. Pero supongo que si yo hubiera sido Seis, definitivamente no habríamos tenido esta película de acción y suspense que llegó al top ten del servicio de streaming, Netflix.

La historia retrata cómo ciertas organizaciones (estoy tratando de mantener mi cabeza a salvo) pueden realmente necesitar ensuciarse las manos a veces para tratar con criminales realmente terribles y difíciles en formas que los "protocolos" no les permitirían, con el único propósito de aprehender al criminal más rápido. Pero a veces, lo que siempre ocurre con este tipo de situaciones, se desvían. Los individuos que seleccionan para sus trabajos sucios siempre serán desechables, y tienen que vigilar sus propias espaldas y mantener la cabeza por sí mismos.

Pero este es un tipo de historia que se ha visto una y otra vez en la industria cinematográfica. Y realmente no hay nada malo en ese tipo de argumento. Lo que importa son los matices a la hora de llevar a cabo la película. No me gustó el hecho de que algunas de las cosas que vi ya habían sido predichas por mí, pero la película logró entregarse con giros compensatorios que me hicieron sentir como "meh, la historia cliché puede deslizarse".

Seamos un poco específicos, ¿quieres? Realmente no quiero entregarles una profundidad superficial de mis pensamientos, ya que ese es el propósito principal de esta crítica:

Probablemente he dejado claro que toda la historia era algo predecible, pero es cómo percibí el desarrollo lo que voy a compartir ahora.

La historia comenzó con una nota muy sutil y progresó gradualmente hacia escenas realmente atractivas y entretenidas. Algunos cineastas desarrollan las películas de forma que se quedan parados hasta que llegan a la acción concreta en la que quieren centrar la película, pero ese no fue el caso de esta película. Las primeras escenas eran atractivas, pero eso era sólo la punta del iceberg. Todas las escenas de acción de esta película me parecieron muy intrigantes y entretenidas.

A pesar de que creía que tenía una idea de cómo iba a ir todo, sin embargo, no terminó como debía, en mi opinión. Cuando llevas a tu público a una determinada forma de conclusión, está bien dar un giro inesperado, pero no está bien llegar a una resolución algo vaga. Pensé que iba a haber una gran revelación al final sobre algo, pero no fue el caso. Más bien, decidieron aumentar la confusión sobre el terreno.

Mi hipótesis inmediata fue que probablemente pretendían dar a luz una secuela. Y eso debería estar bien, pero al menos deberían haber dado respuesta a la "única" pregunta que habían infundido en el público, y tal vez dejar alguna escena post-créditos que planteara otra pregunta candente y diera un poco la impresión de que se avecina una secuela. En cambio, dejaron una nota que parecía estar sentada en la valla. El cierre simplemente no parecía lo suficientemente sustancial como para incitar a uno a querer una secuela. Pero, por supuesto, vi muchos aspectos positivos en esta película.

Esta es la mejor parte de la película, para mí. Por muy importante que sea el argumento, no se puede tratar la cinimatografía de cualquier manera. Si no, tendrías una buena historia que se vería terrible, prácticamente.

No dejaba de decir a mi amigo que me encantaban los ángulos de cámara y la dinámica empleada en la película. Puede que fueran fáciles de hacer o no (lo dudo), pero contribuyeron en gran medida a que la película resultara atractiva.

Los efectos visuales utilizados en esta película también son dignos de aplauso. Es muy atractivo ver que la industria cinematográfica ha llegado a una etapa en la que puede hacer películas con cualidades apreciables. Aunque algunas escenas tenían que ser poco naturales, como siempre ocurre con las películas de este género, eran mucho menos irreales de lo que podían ser hace una década.

Este es un aspecto en el que no se quiere meter la pata como cineasta. Porque los actores son los responsables de vender sus personajes al público. Sin su excelente interpretación, la película podría haber sido fácilmente detestable.

No conocía realmente a Ryan Gosling antes de ver esta película, pero me encantó su interpretación. Creo que podría haber habido un poco más de elemento cómico en su personaje, pero supongo que los directores realmente querían a Six de la forma en que lo retrataron. Un actor profesional como él no puede permitirse hacer menos de lo que su reputación dice de él, así que cumplió con excelencia una vez más.

Chris Evans es un actor que empieza a gustarme a medida que lo veo más en la pantalla. Al principio, no podía reconocerlo porque mostraba una personalidad completamente diferente y su aspecto era totalmente distinto al que siempre le había conocido. La capacidad de adoptar diferentes personalidades es una virtud que no muchos actores pueden poseer.

Otro actor que me gustaría elogiar es Dhanush. Nunca le había visto en ningún sitio, y dudo que sea nuevo en la industria del cine. Pero lo hizo increíblemente bien con su pequeño papel en la película. Como director, lo elegiría si buscara un actor que ofreciera una interpretación única como villano o cualquier otro papel similar.

Muchas veces, las películas de acción que no se inclinan por el thriller tienen elementos totalmente predecibles, y ésta no fue una excepción. Sin embargo, esta película ha conseguido ofrecer unas vibraciones realmente entretenidas y emocionantes que han hecho que cambie mi opinión sobre los clichés argumentales. Los clichés pueden seguir siendo entretenidos, pero lo que más importa es la creatividad y la brillantez que hay detrás de ellos.

Si buscas una película llena de acción, puedes optar por ésta. Satisface suficientemente el tipo de público de la película. Sé con certeza que ahora me interesan las películas de acción como ésta.

Le daría a la película una calificación de 𝟠/𝟙𝟘.
