Kilometers and Luggage
The university I attended isn't so far from home. It's only about two hours away. And so whenever I leave at 5 p.m., I usually arrive around 7 p.m.ish. My mother never liked that, though, as she always considers travelling at night to be unsafe. She'd always wonder why I often did that, too.
You see, travelling way earlier, like in the mornings, isn't so much of a big deal if I don't have anything else planned for that time. It is the thought of packing up, moving myself and my luggage to get into a commercial vehicle, and then spending hours in motion. I consider it a lot of stress most times, and so I would unnecessarily stall most times until evening comes before I set out to finally move.
In other words, I really do not enjoy traveling. And that's what I thought for a very long time. Lately, I have had to travel to different parts of my country for different reasons. And it was recently that I realised that I actually do explore new places as long as there isn't too much discomfort.
So speaking of discomfort, there is something about travelling long distances that I particularly do not enjoy, and it contributes to why I do not like to travel generally. That idea of sitting for so many hours is just a total turn-off. If only I could just teleport between places...
Another aspect of concern for me is how I pack to travel. My first instinct is to travel light. I am not a fan of carrying so many things when I am travelling.
I simply stick to the things that are necessary for my travel. The exact amount of clothes and footwear I would need, a very few things for body hygiene, and then my gadgets.
PC, smartphone, mifi, power bank, and their respective chargers are things that I do not travel without. Otherwise, how would I even manage to do the things I do online, like Hive?
If I am travelling to somewhere really far, like a faraway state, I usually take books along. I read books during my travels sometimes. After that time travelling, though, it usually takes a while till I pick it up again.
Choosing between long-distance travels and short-distance travels, I think my answer is pretty clear and straight-forward: no travels. I mean, the shorter the distance, the better. Interestingly, I enjoy driving—not for too many hours, though.
The farthest I have ever travelled is about 650 km, or 400 miles. It takes between eight and twelve hours to go between Rivers State and Ogun State most times, depending on obvious factors. Not only is it always so expensive, but many hours spent in usually discomforting vehicles is another reason.
One time, I thought to take a direct bus home for a journey of 14 hours. It was way cheaper, for some reason, and so I boarded it. What I didn't realise were the caveats to such a cheap ride for such a long journey.
Considering that it was a pretty long journey, leaving my luggage in the booth was going to leave more room for me in the bus. It was just my backpack and a small handbag. But the driver asked me to find somewhere else around me to keep the bags. He was going to use the booth to make extra cash by running delivery errands with it.
The entire booth wasn't enough for the driver to load up all the deliveries he had to make, and he loaded them up around us, the passengers. We looked no different than sardines in a tin can. It was all too tight, as there was no room to freely move.
And, of course, there was no air conditioning system to provide cool air throughout the journey. I couldn't expect that, as the fee was about half of what most spacebuses would ask for. And spacebuses usually have good AC systems.
That's how I spent 10+ hours with so many inconveniences, not even including how nonpatronizing the driver was. And so, right there and then, I chose to never pick low cost over comfort as long as I have the money to afford it, especially for long-distance journeys.
So if I ever need to travel, I try to make my luggage as light to carry as I can. Travelling is not my thing, so I would prefer way shorter distances. And, if I can afford it, I will try to ensure comfort on my travels.

First of all… so you’re this old? 👀 Ya a big man o!
Second, I get that stuff about the discomfort. But you’re a strong man. I don’t even understand why you don’t use your Private Jet. Are you trying to be humble sir? Just fly away 😌
Old ke... Please o. I'm just in my forties.
Had it been I know you now... 😤 lol
You’re just in your fourties. 😂
The inconveniences that comes with traveling especially if it is long is what gets me tired when it comes to traveling.
NYSC will definitely make you travel a distance you didn’t plan for😂😂
If only we could just disappear and reappear like in the movies...
NYSC has actually taken me touring Southern Nigeria.
Well it took me from the South and kept me in the North😂😂
I get it when people hate traveling that comes with discomfort meanwhile me on the other hand , with or without discomfort I’ll still travel 20 to 22 hours sitting and sleeping 😂
I really love being in motion
I can imagine that you're the kind to sleep anywhere, even on trees...
Where's the last place you traveled to?
Trees🤣🤣 because I’m an environmentalist?
Takoradi
We sort of have the same experience when it comes to traveling though, but in different ways 😅.
From the beginning, I have always enjoyed traveling. The sight seeing, the breeze blowing my face and lot more. For a very long time though, I didn't mind the discomfort.
But the older I get, I realize that I still enjoy traveling, but I now mind the discomfort.
Imagine being put in the middle of two big woman in a backseat of a bus 🥺.
Traveling is still an enjoyable adventure for me, but presently, I'm not inclined towards it, especially if I won't be comfortable in the long run.
PS: Mummies sure have a protective airs around us. My mum will always tell me to leave wherever I am early enough if I'm coming home, and there is me who loves to get home late in the night when everyone is asleep 😅.
You wake up and they are like, "when did you come in?"😅🤸
Eii...I so do not like being put in betweeeen big people. I would usually prefer to wait for a different bus if I cannot change seats. It is not me that they would choke.
I think that no matter how old we get, mothers would always do their thing protecting us.
You will now be like 👀👀 😅
You know, my sister asked me why I am yet to see e my mother la d, I old her "I don't want to travel", she'd seem to see it to be a petty little reason but to me, that's just the deal, I seldom travel.
I don't like long roads and the baggages like kidnapping, accident that some times comes with it.
I didn't want to travel home in December simply because I just don't like to travel, but I eventually did as I considered that my mother and family had missed me very much, as well as I did miss them too.
How far away from home are you?
I think the reason why most people hate traveling is the discomfort that comes with it. In this part of the world where the numbers of bad road outnumbers the good ones, traveling can be a night mare.
Oh, yes! Bad roads are another reason why I do not like to travel. I feel like my blood pressure rises a lot more because of them.
Lolz.
Ensuring comfort is very important, sometimes the inconveniences will be more than the money we would have paid using a more costlier vehicle. I think most men manages packing necessities more than women...most of us want to pack heaven and earth thinking that all will be important, thereby adding to travelling stress especially on a long distance journey. Sincerely, I dread traveling to my home town from lag...the last time was 16 hours with my kids with damaged air conditioner in the private car we chatted..I should have known that the car doesn't even have a good A.c
If money is no object, long distance journey should be by flight biko
I know! 😅 You women pack so much ehn...but it's understandable that there are lot of things that you often need to take care of yourself.
But let me understand something. Was it engineer that drove all the 16 hours of the journey? Waoh. That's a lot. Especially without AC. When next, make sure the AC is working abeg.
Noo
We hired a private car not knowing that the car's A.c was faulty
When I was in university my mom would always fight with me when I’m going to school because I would pack everything I can lay hands on especially food.😂
I prefer to travel light but I’m a woman, we don’t travel light.😂
You people that pack heaven and earth when traveling, is that you don't plan to go back home in ten years? 😅 You women that do not travel light.
😂😂 everything is important. You need to be a woman to understand.
These drivers live to test your patience 😂 imagine after paying a huge amount, at the end theyll use crayfish and keep close to you. most times, they even ask you to pay 1k for them to put your luggage in the booth. It's just crazy
And you look very good in your uniform 😊
I totally hate it when drivers charge for keeping luggage in their booth, when it's not like it's on their heads, especially for really simple load. And then the discomfort is just another thing.
Oh, stopeet...lol
Thank you
I hate it too, but it's not like you have a choice. Either pay or lap your box😂
You're welcome🤗
