We Lost a Good One

Well it is a chilly and gloomy day here again as usual for Michigan. We even had some light snow showers blow across the lake. It is true I love the view, but I do miss the sun and warm of Virginia. However today, I am not complaining about that as it seems fitting for we lost a great entertainer. Gordon Lightfoot passed away at the age of 84.

The ducks didnt mind the snow, I suppose.

I am not certain what song of his I first heard. Guessing that it was the ballad: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. That came out in 1976 when I was ten. Thinking back it is funny that of the two adults I spent most of my time with; one liked classical music and the other country. As most kids at that age, I was into rock, so those became my musical pillars going forward.

I bet the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald crossed over onto the country stations and that is where I heard it. It is probably Gordon's most recognizable song, however I soon discovered his catalog was filled with awesome music that I can only describe as folk slash pop if that even makes sense. Somehow Gordon seemed to bridge that gap much like a John Denver.

Here is my Gordon Lightfoot playlist right from my phone! I will admit to falling asleep often to his crooning.

However, one of his best songs to me was written as he was going through a divorce. The lyrics as well as the music are just top notch.

Shiny and sparkly
And splendidly bright
Here one day
Gone one night
(Michael Jackson Gone Too Soon)

Thanks for all the music, Gordon.

He sure did give us a lot of good music. We are fortunate to have had him for so long.
A couple more to add to your list:

  • Summer Side of Life
  • The Watchman's Gone
Two of my favorites, it is hard to pick a favorite but they are in the top 10 for sure...

Indeed. There are so many good ones as they speak to different seasons in one's life I suppose.

When the lack of sun from the grey skies stretches to about a week, I find I crave blue skies and sun!

For me there is a point in between,a nice cloudy day, too much sun scorches me but some rolling clouds and warm enough temperature is my haven

Gordon had a unique voice and his songs will be remembered forever. Heck, even my mom liked his hits. Several of the tunes from your post are in my playlist under "Gems" @old-guy-photos

RIP, Gordon Lightfoot.

I suppose it is the circle of life and all of that, but it still hurts to know we are all getting older...
