The turning point.
"Hello mom, I got to school safely. Regards to dad and everyone, I will do all it takes to make you guys proud." Stephanie, who just gained admission to college, said over the phone after a 6-hour drive to school.
"I trust you to; you have always made us proud, my dear Step, so i trust you to do it again." Her mom responded.
Stephanie is famous back home for how she excelled in her academics; kids in the neighborhood were jealous and envious of her because of how much everyone talks about her. In the neighborhood, when they ask other kids about their performance, nobody bothers to ask Stephanie because it is no new news that she smashes every result with A's all through.
Finally, she was the first amongst her peers that was offered admission to college as it was expected, and now it was time to prove herself somewhere else where she was not known. "I might have the freedom that I have always craved for, but the reason I am here is to study." Stephanie said to herself as she climbed up the bed allocated to her by the school.
Gbor gbor gbor, someone knocked on the door. "Hi, I am Emma, and I am your new roommate." Emma said with excitement written all over her face the moment Stephanie opened the door.
"I am Stephanie, and it is really nice to meet you." Stephanie responded shocked at the type of person Emma is and how excited she is about going to college.
Emma turned out to be the party type; she has always prayed and hoped to gain admission to college so she can be free from the shackles of her parents and party like she has always wanted. Now she is in college and miles away from her parents, so it was time for her to be a free bird and do what only she wants to do and not what her parents want her to do. Few weeks in school, and Emma is famous and well known around school just like she wanted, "the life to the party." Other students call her
"Hey Stephanie, would you like to follow me to a party?" Emma asked
"I don't think so. I have a test on Monday, and I need to prepare for it because if I fail, my parents will kill me." Stephanie responded
"You have to stop being a mommy and daddy's girl for once; come party with me just this once, and if you don't like it, I promise you, I will never ask you to come with me again. Pleaseeeeeee." Emma pleaded, and it touched Stephanie's soft spot, and she agreed to go with her.
"Okay, but just this once and no more." Stephanie responded as she stood up to dress
"You are the best, Steph." Emma said as she hugged Stephanie from the back.
There is always a first time for something, and sometimes the first time can become the last time, but in Stephanie's case, the first was the beginning of a whole new life for Stephanie. She started to party way more than Emma, who introduced her to partying; everything in Stephanie's life was perfectly fine until she met Emma. Her grades began to decline, and it was no longer news that the most intelligent student in the neighborhood now had to struggle academically; it was disheartening news, and her parents were disappointed and hoping to see her when she comes home for the summer holiday.
"This is not what you promised me, Steph; this is unlike you; what is really happening." Stephanie's mom asked after Stephanie looked all worried.
"Mom, I really need to start living alone in my dorm; that's the only way I can go back to being Stephanie, you know." Stephanie responded with tears rolling down her chin.
"Crying won't solve the problem; you really need to go back to the daughter I can brag about anywhere." Her mom responded
"Mom, it is my roommate; everything in my life was fine until she came into my life and my life took a different turn; I don't even know who I am anymore." Stephanie said as she cried even more, falling into her mom's open arms.
Paths can cross, but we sometimes aren't meant to walk the same way. It was obvious that Stephanie wasn't one to party, but she let peer pressure influence her choices. Luckily she was able to turn around in time, partly due to her supportive parent.
You have said it, paths can cross but that does not mean we are meant to walk the same way. A summary of everything.
Friends can become a strong influence when a person's character is not well defined. That's what happened to the girl, she let herself be carried away by her roommate to a life without limits and with many excesses.
