Visit to the city of Smederevo and the fortress of historical significance
This summer, we were not able to choose where to go to the sea, due to the virus that prevails and vaccines that I do not consider necessary or to serve any good!
On the contrary, about vaccines and this virus that surrounds us at the moment, I don't think it's as dangerous as it is pressuring people from all sides and denying them various trips, or many things.
This summer, we decided to visit the Smederevo Fortress, which is close to us, but of great historical significance.
Smederevo Fortress is one of the largest medieval fortresses located on the plain and one of the last great works of Serbian architecture that still stands in the same place today and testifies to the distant past that is behind us.
Entrance to the fortress
The fortress was built by despot Djuradj Brankovic and his wife Irina in the 15th century.
The fortress is surrounded by two rivers, the Danube and Jezava, an artificial moat passes through the fortress that connects both rivers, so it is unique in its architecture in the Middle Ages, which is surrounded by water.
The water in the artificial trench that surrounds the fortress is emerald green.
Legend has it that this city or fortress of the damned Irina, due to the works on the fortress that developed at high speed, many people died during the construction of this fortress, so people mostly blamed Irina, so the city has remained under this name the city of the cursed Irina.
The interior of the fortress is occupied by a large area of greenery, with various planted trees, a bicycle path, a running path, benches for rest, made in the form of a large park for recreation and relaxation in nature.
In one corner of the fortress there is a decorative well, which was once used to extract water from it with a bucket hanging chains, today a fountain is installed in that place and all that remains is a decorative memory of how water was once extracted from deep wells.
Walking along the thick walls of the tower, which are built of brick poured in mortar, you can see some remains of the tower that was once used for housing, there are four two-part windows carved in stone with arches facing the Danube.
The pigeons also found their shelter in the thick walls of the fortress.
Another tower can be noticed, which is in a slightly better condition, which comes out on the very bank of the Danube, and there are also fishermen who fish behind the thick walls of the tower and the exit to the Danube.
The city and the surrounding towers are separated from the Danube by a path and a thick fence, on the fence there are steps where we climbed and above there is a place like a small terrace from which you can observe the Danube and everything on it. Thus, looking at the Danube, we noticed large ships sailing on the blue Danube and ducks, which are the most frequent inhabitants of these waters.
Some of the towers or walls that surround the fortress were destroyed during the war, so today they are dilapidated and crooked. The impression leaves that they will fall, but they are fenced for the safety of the visitor, so they can be photographed from a slightly further position.
In the interior of the thick walls that surround the former city, today it is increasingly used for various events, one of the most famous events is Smederevo Autumn, which is a hundred-year tradition in which the rich and native region of Smederevo is represented.
The interior of these small houses is a space used for roasting meat, there is an old oven, built.
This place is a monument of ancient history, even though archeological works are still being done, so for all those who love history, there is one interesting story and a wonderful castle that has stood for centuries and testifies to the ancient past.
