INCOMPLETE CHILDHOOD

Durning my childhood days, there are many things i wished i have done. I really wanted to play with different type of toys, explore many things, but then, i was not able to.

Growing up in an African home comes with lots of restrictions - do this, don't do that, this or that kid is possessed by witch craft, so i do not want to see you playing with him or her, if she is a female, go to sleep, get inside your room and study, don't eat food from mama Iyabo, she may poison you, but they will be the first to devour any food that Mama Iyabo offer us when we go visiting, don't play in the rain, and many more restrictions that pissed me off back then. One thing that always get me scared is my moms bombastic side eye. That eye is an indication of hell is about to get loose on you.

When i was growing up, the belief in witch craft was really strong. Any small issue, they blame it on a girl suspected of being a witch. Illuminati was feared to the core, as it was believed that they take people to hell fire through the songs they sing. When we were kids, we believed that rappers were responsible for leading their fans to hell through their songs. Eminem, Michael Jackson, Jay z, 50 and many rappers were dispised by me, though i really loved their songs.

During my childhood, there are many songs that i wish i listened and vibe to, many children songs that i did not enjoy. Even these tv show - Barney and friends, Tom and jerry, and power rangers were believed to be a medium for the illuminatti to capture more souls for hell. I don't know why these superstition, but then, I was not able to fully entertain myself as a child because of these superstitious belief.

During those days, if i'm passing somewhere and hear Coolio, Michael, Pac or Biggie, i will either close my ears tight, or run away. When Pac released Hit em up, a diss track towards Biggie, I heard it and immediately fall in love with it, not knowing it was sang by 2 Pac. I became sad when i found out the singer cause' welp, i don't want to go to hell.

Before i entered the university, i went to visit my aunty to spend some time with her. Howver, i was marvelled by what i saw. Her kids were listening to all these songs. Enjoying the TV shows and being happy by it. I became weary, acting like a pastor's child. I started preaching to them, but guess what? the people that i was preaching to know the bible more than i do. They became the ones to lecture me on the bible.

After some time, i began to listen to all those songs. Honestly, i missed a lot. i had to start watching, listening and having fun. i was like a kid stucked in an adults body because i enjoyed those TV shows, and more, Eminem became my favorite rapper. Though hiphop is black music (50 cent), Eminem became the god of rap.

Up till now, i am still unveiling old songs that i was not able to listen to when i was a kid. It actually affected my life to an extent. Back then, my close friends notice that i still watch children cartoons, and start to think that i am still stuck in the past, and i dont want to let my childhood days go. Welp, I dont bother to explain anything to them, let them think what they want. All i want is to enjoy what i missed as a child.

Wow this really explains the definition of African parents.
If you grew up in an African home, as in real African home, and you don't know how to understand every message that bombastic side eye is telling you them you're doom😂😂😂.. have a nice day.

That part with cartoons pained me so much especially after some busy bodies will preach nonsensical ideas to my mom and she’d try to stop me from “making a mistake”. People will use stupid superstitions to scare their kids and blame it on the Bible (SMH)

It's really sad to see how caged most people's mentality is. Those over holy holy people do get me pissed most times. That's how one came the other day and was blabbing like house fly in my ears.

African parents and rules move hand in hand, my parents allow me watch cartoons but banned Barney and friends after someone told them it is related to Illuminati. Funny people.

I can relate with the superstitious beliefs that comes with living with some Nigerian parents.

That rap was my favorite genre while growing up. My mum used slaps ans beating to try to get me to stop listening to them so I won't go to hell but me I stubborn gan.

I was able to let go of some things but rap remains.

Thank you for sharing.
