The spicy sweet pepper [ENG-ESP]

After a long wait, almost 8 months, the fruits of my chili bell pepper bush were ready to be harvested. To reach this stage, this solitary sweet bell pepper plant had to go through a journey of adversities. Do not think it is easy to grow and develop in the current conditions of the country. But with a good dose of perseverance and the necessary care, it is possible to reach the goal and see that its fruits are beautiful.

Después de una larga espera, unos casi 8 meses, los frutos de mi mata de ají estaban listo para ser cosechados. Para llegar hasta esta etapa, esta solitaria mata de ají dulce tuvo que transitar un periplo de adversidades. No crean ustedes que es fácil crecer y desarrollarse en las actuales condiciones del país. Pero con una buena dosis de constancia y con los cuidados necesarios se puede alcanzar la meta y ver que sus frutos son hermosos.

One fine day, when my wife returned from the fruit store, I saw that she brought with her some leafy sweet peppers. Their intense red color made them stand out among the rest of the recently acquired seasonings. Their characteristic smell flooded our kitchen when they were opened to check if their flavor was sweet or if we had been sold some spicy ones. Also their shape and size were just right to be worthy of taking advantage of their valuable genetic load. Therefore, and before they were refrigerated in our fridge, I extracted their seeds to make a seedbed.

The initial stage of my chili bell pepper seedlings' life was spent in the safety of plastic cups. To guarantee the care and attention of everyone in the family, the seedbed was started in several cups used to serve coffee. This stage begins with the seedlings emerging to the surface of the soil until they reach a height of about 4 cm or have their first 5 leaves. This occurs in the first 20 to 25 days after germination. As good neo natas in these stages they are very susceptible to environmental changes and it is enough to stop watering them one of the two that correspond to them in a day for death to surround them in their plastic home.

Un buen día, al regresar, mi esposa de la frutería, vi que trajo consigo unos frondosos ajíes dulces. Su color rojo intenso los hacía sobresalir entre el resto de los aliños recién adquiridos. Su característico olor inundó toda nuestra cocina cuando fueron abiertos para comprobar si su sabor era dulce o nos habían vendido unos picantes. También su Forma y tamaño eran los adecuados para ser dignos de aprovechar su valiosa carga genética. Por lo tanto, y antes de que fueran refrigerados en nuestra nevera, extraje sus semillas para hacer un semillero.

La etapa inicial de la vida de mi mata de ají dulce transcurrió en la seguridad de unos vasitos de plásticos. Para garantizarles el cuidado y atención de todos en la familia, el semillero se inició en varios vasos de los que se usan para servir café. Esta etapa comienza con la salida de las plántulas hacia la superficie de la tierra hasta que alcanzan una altura de unos 4 cms o tienen sus primeras 5 hojitas. Esto ocurre en los primeros 20 a 25 días de germinadas. Como buenas neo natas en estas etapas son muy susceptibles a los cambios ambientales y basta con dejar de regarlas una de las dos que le corresponden en un día para que la muerte les ronde su hogar de plástico.

When the time came, we transplanted almost twenty maticas, all with the indicated number of leaves and with varied sizes. The soil of the nursery had been previously conditioned by pulling weeds and the remains of the roots of the palms, and a small dose of fertilizer was also added. The planting of these plants in this matero had a competitive advantage with respect to another place, since this is the place where my children and I do our physical training, which guaranteed the necessary care.

Para la segunda etapa de la curva de crecimiento de mis plantas, tomamos la decisión de utilizar uno de los materos del patio. En este matero desde que fue construido había sido el hogar de unas cuantas matas de palmas. No si sea el caso de ustedes, pero estas matas de palmas son muy bonitas al comienzo, pero luego se tornan muy largas y pierden sus encantos, y en mi casa se les sumió el hecho que se fueron secando, por lo tanto, y cerrando su ciclo las sacamos para darle paso al semillero de ajíes dulce.

Llegado el momento se hizo el trasplante de casi unas veintenas de maticas, todas con la cantidad de hojas indicadas y con variados tamaños. El suelo del matero previamente había sido acondicionado arrancando malezas y restos de raíces de las palmas, de igual manera se le agregó una pequeña dosis de fertilizante. La siembra de estas matas en este matero tenía una ventaja competitiva con respecto a otro lugar, ya que este es el sitio donde mis hijos y yo realizamos nuestros entrenamientos físicos, con lo cual se garantizaba los cuidados necesarios.

In the course of these months, adversities and the attacks of a white mosquito, a pest that settles on the back of the leaves, decimated the original population of my sweet bell pepper plants. Like the last of the Mohicans, this brave plant fulfilled its divine cycle and fructified.

For every farmer, the most rewarding part is harvest time. Seeing how their plants bear the much desired fruit. At this stage the expectations are very great, and in this case remembering the pleasant sensations that produced in our kitchen the progenitors of the freshly harvested chili was insurmountable.

En el transcurrir de estos meses, las adversidades y los ataques de un mosquito blanco, una plaga que se posan en la parte posterior de las hojas, hizo que se diezmara la población original de mis plantas de ají dulce. Como si fuera el último de los mohicanos, esta valiente planta cumplió con su ciclo divino y fructificó.

Para todo agricultor, la parte más gratificante es el momento de la cosecha. Ver como sus plantas dan el tan deseado fruto. En esta etapa las expectativas son muy grandes, y en este caso el recordar las agradables sensaciones que produjo en nuestra cocina los progenitores del ají recién cosechado era insuperable.

Como todo en la vida el hombre propone y Dios dispone, por alguna razón, durante su etapa de crecimiento y desarrollo o durante la floración a través de una polinización cruzada, el ají dulce se volvió picante. Así mismo, todas las expectativas creadas para aliñar una sabrosa sopa dominguera se cayeron. Ahora darán paso a convertirse en parte de un picante.
