LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE
Learning a language other than my mother tongue and the universal language, English would be a proud achievement on my part. There are many benefits of being familiar with the languages of other ethnicities and if I'm allowed to learn, I would go for YORUBA.
I have lots of reasons why I choose to learn Yoruba; at least to start with, I reside in a Yoruba - speaking state (LAGOS NIGERIA) and also live among the Yorubas. I don't expect them to speak English all the time simply because I don't understand the language so the least I can do is to learn it. Ever felt odd being in a group and yet not aware of what is going on in the group??? 🤣🤣🤣. Well it happens to me most during conversations and to be honest, I always feel like disappearing from their midst 😅😅😜 but since I can't, I find myself staring in space🌌 and engaging in unimportant stuff just to while away time😀.
It's already my 8 year living in Lagos state, and the only Yoruba language I know is their greetings. To the best of my knowledge, the Yorubas hold their culture 🧫 in high esteem and their language is not exempted! Wherever you go, in the market, at school, in the hospital, in the bank, and many other places, these people dominate everywhere and they can't do without their language even in official settings. Oh yes, it's that serious and on different occasions, I have missed some good tidings just because I am not hearing the language. I remember pricing a particular product from an older Yoruba woman the other day in the market, and the woman kept speaking Yoruba for me, at a point, we lost communication. Apparently, she can't speak English and that was how I missed buying that product which I loved so much! Of course, I later bought it but it took me hours before I could see it in another place.
In the hospital throughout my stay, during my childbearing period, I felt the negative impact of not hearing this language so badly. I saw my fellow mothers getting the services they need so easily after communicating with the nurses and other workers in the ward speaking yoruba. Mine will take ages, speaking English and getting ignored🤦. It's not right for them to using native languages in an official setting but then, this is how it has been with my experience so far. It's either you speak the language, flow with them and get what you may need easily or you wait till whenever they open your chapter. Even on my immunization trips, this language has cost me time. I will visit the clinic so early and go back home late, just because of my inability to speak Yoruba! A lot of sentiments happen there and at this point, I am tired of complaining over how they handle things but rather wish I can learn this language to flow with them.
Luckily enough, my kids offer Yoruba as a course in school though they are still small, maybe I will learn from them. This is where I stay, YORUBA LAND, and learning this language will mean a lot to me. It means I won't have any barriers 🚧 in communication wherever I found myself in Lagos state. Of course, it will be an added advantage to me in my life endeavors socializing with different kinds of people here in Lagos.

THANKS FOR READING!!!
Ah!!! 8 years and you still did not learn anything aside their greeting? I don't believe that, you can tell me you don't speak and hear but please don't just tell me is only their greetings you hear and speak.
I can imagine the trauma you had to go through for those eight years, it's not funny at all oo because I have been around yoruba people before, their language is so so important to them, even when they leave their state self, you will always see them putting in one yoruba at some point of their conversation.
Learning yoruba is not a bad idea at all, it's a really good one and it's a good thing the boys are taught yoruba in school, they won't suffer like you did, sorry ehn 😪.
And by the way, Thank you so much for yesterday ma'am, you were part of people that made my day so fun and beautiful and I sincerely want to say thank you for all you did 🥰🥰.
Have a fabulous day ahead Ma'am 😘😘.
🤩🤩🤩🤩, I don't hear even come..lolz🤫🤫🤫
Yoruba people have no boundaries when it comes to where they speak their language. Just can't place it🤩🤩
Uwc Sweety, hope you had a wonderful day?
Learning a language as an adult.may be very cumbersome. In the formative years, as a child, one could learn all the language as they grow.
It is more difficult to learn a language as an adult.
Perhaps, that why for 8 years, all you could do is to greet in Yoruba language.
For some of us that were born here, despite that we are not of the Yoruba ethnic group, we could not only speak but also write the language.
The advantage of getting to speak, write and understand languages is that it gives you an hedge to be able to do business and communicate with people who speak the language.
Learning isn't a crime though. You have a great chance to learn Yoruba, just put your mind to it.
Woww
I love your view on this.... it's difficult for an adult though we can still learn it, just that I haven't given it my full attention.
Wait oo, you can even write in yoruba?.
..this is serious🤩. Lucky you oo, honestly, I desire to learn this. Time to be serious 👌
Define your interest and follow it to the latter.
I could not help myself from laughing while I read this post. 😂😂
Yoruba people be doing the most with their culture.
The part that cracked me up the most is the part where you talked about how you could not get what you wanted from that old woman, simply because you both could not communicate.
I am Yoruba, and I know how bad we are at keeping our dialect to ourselves when it comes to official settings. I mean, it is just too much.😂😂 Church o, school o, hospital, farm, bank, anywhere! Anywhere that is dominated by Yoruba is most likely going to have Yoruba languages here and there.
But it is actually normal. Had it been that Lagos was largely populated by a tribe like Igede, the same would have still been the case. You just have to learn the dominant language if you really want to roll with that tribe. I think hanging out with friends that speak Yoruba often can help you understand the language. You can just always ask them what everything they say means. Yoruba is quite easy to understand. Speaking, however, is not so easy to do. I struggle with speaking a lot of my own dialect.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Olujay, keep laughing...lolz
Glad you can attest to all I said here. Oh! You are yoruba, why una dey behave like that🤫🤣
I heard Yoruba is an easy language just haven't pay much attention to learning it.
Time to do so🤩👍
8 years is enough to learn more of their language maybe you didn't have interest 😂😂 i stay in PH and i hear ikwerre, although no much difference with igbo. I still can't get lost when two people are talking
I hear say Yoruba no hard learn sha, that's why you even see their little children speak at an early age
Babe you are right....I no put interest 🤦♀️🤦♀️...I wish to from now 🤣🤣🤣
Are you still in lagos?
You can learn now na
Yes I am....i will learn👍
Learn come teach me o
Is Yoruba that difficult? I think it is easy to learn if you are willing to.
I remember when I writing GCE in 2008, there were lots of Igbo students in the exam hall during the Yoruba exam, and immediately after I offer to help one out, others joined. We had lots of fun after the exam and it made me realize how some tribes are willing to learn the language.
Yoruba are fond of communicating with the language truly but I think it is the same everywhere. If you get to a place where Igbo or Hausa dominate, it will be difficult for a Yoruba to cope among them
Hhmmm, well I have an interest in learning the language oo just that it is difficult 😄. To my kids, it's not for them but I am an adult you know🤩
All the same, I wish to learn now with all seriousness
One of the very interesting articles because of course learning a new language is one of progress for all of us
You are right 👍
I can feel your pain when you can't communicate or understand what is being discussed lol, you won't even know if it is you they are bad mouthing or if what they are discussing can be beneficial to you and lagos is a home for yoruba people.. I believe with time you will understand because there are many people from other tribes that have learn how to speak yoruba now...
You got my point burl🤩🤩
So many times, I will be looking for an interpreter especially when I sense they are talking about me..lol
Yeah, it's high time I give attention to learning it👌
Thanks for your visit👍
Omo it is very important you learn the language so you won't be left out when you're in their mist.
It's easy for kids to learn things, in sure they will learn it easily because most of them are being taught in school.
Exactly Nancy🤩👌👍

Nice choice dear!
Hahaha
See my partner here 😂😂😂😂
Hehehehe 😂
Lol... What do you see in Yoruba? Hahah.
I won't even learn 'come' in any other Nigerian language. This Igbo I know is more than enough Biko 😂.
What you said about the Yorubas and how they cherish their language is the fact. Haha. They love it so much. Haha. But, I no gree learn. Haha
Hahaha
Bro, you may not understand the degree of oppression these people are causing us with their language 🤣🤣
As far as I live here, I have to learn yoruba o, enough of their wahala
You sef hate to learn yoruba😂😂😂
The reason I love yoruba language, it's because everything has a meaning and it's easy to understand. I also learnt the language and I communicate better when am angry or pleading with a seller in the market. Good luck on your journey in the learning yoruba language. Thanks for sharing dear
Hmmmm
Babe...come and teach me, I need it oo
Especially in the market 😂😂😂👍
No problem with that, anytime dear👍
I hear you. Learning dutch in a city where everyone speaks english was not easy but luckily I made some effort and learnt the language. I know enough now. How long have you been there? I am sure you will learn the language just give yourselgf time.
Wow...you tried learning the language Momo...
I have been here for 8 years but then no interest until recently, cos it has been costing me much!
I believe if I give it attention, I will learn it.👌
Yes you will learn but like you said you need to give it attention. I took it step by step. My first goals were a social one - I wanted to understand the basics and to be able to hold my own and to not be lost at parties or have people speak english because I am there. I achieved that. Slow and steady won the race.
Learning the social part of the language is cool. I think I will start with it😇
I have a lady who is willing to teach me🤩👍
That is fantastic. Start there with fun things and it will go quite fast.
Yay! 🤗

These people cannot breathe well without speaking their dialect every second 🤣🤣
Kilode🤷♀️
learning a new language actually improve the way you think
You are very right on this Sam👌👍😇
Thanks for stopping by 👍
😂 I'm glad I'm not the only one, I've lived in Lagos for 16 years, almost my whole life. Yet I still can't speak the language. I only know a few words and their meanings in Yoruba.
I feel that at this time I'm supposed to be able to make sentences or at least understand conversations but I can't 😩.
I noticed an error in your tag ma, it should be edition "3".
Smiles....you suppose to be better than me you know 🤩😂
All the same, it's good we know this language as far as we still reside in Lagos.
Thanks for the correction
I will update 👍

Abi now...
You're welcome 😊.
Right now, I am feeling somehow.
Though speaking Yoruba everywhere is possible but I did not expect it to be so obvious in a Yoruba state like Lagos State where there are a good number of other tribes.
I am a Yoruba man and I am currently in Enugu. When it comes to communication, I have been looked at like a fool so I understand how it feels.
The look seems weird when I say I did not understand Igbo. 😂😂😂
"That a grown up like you look"
For the language aspect, all tribes speak their language everywhere.
Where I stay, some people will still talk to me in Igbo language when they are aware that I did not understand it.
I hope you're able to learn at a fast rate.
💯💯💯
I perfectly understand you bro
I believe if I give it interest, I will learn it👌👍
Learning a language might be quite difficult, but I'll suggest instead of learning to speak Yoruba, learn to understand it. That would be easier for you, and that way when those around you are speaking it, you won't be completely lost.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
This suggestion I think will be helpful truly🤔...thanks for this Bruno😇👍
8 good years of staying in Lagos without learning the language? How have you been coping here really? I live in Lagos and people just assume everyone understands Yoruba. I'm not Yoruba but I now speak the language as if I am a confirmed Yoruba girl. If there's a language I'd like to understand, it's definitely Spanish.
Really, how did you learn it so fast oo😂😂
Lol, I don't know o. I just know I started speaking one day. Plus, my Yoruba teacher in school was meannnnnnnnnn. you'll learn by force by fire.
You've been in Lagos for eight years and can't speak Yoruba? Damn.
You can get yourself a Yoruba friend and encourage her to speak only the dialect whenever she's with you. That should help.
Lolz
Yesoo, I can't speak yoruba but I wish to..
Thanks for the advice 👍
You're welcome, ma'am.
Learning a language is a great opportunity to learn about other cultures. You are a brave woman!!
Thanks for sharing this in DreemPort. 🤗
Thank you ma👍
Ever felt odd being in a group and yet not aware of what is going on in the group???
Dont worry i understand what you mean 😉
Have always love yoruba, love the way they speak their language..
Learn to nod and smile hehe I know what you mean. That was how I felt in Arabic speaking countries!
When in Rome do as the Romans do, so good for you learning it. It will make living there so much easier and fun!
Popped in through dreemport today!
Hahaha...i use to nod my head in agreement of whatever discussion in social gatherings even when I don't understand what they say..lolz
Learning mood activated 😂👌👍
hehe good luck with it, and remember to have fun, then you will learn more and faster!
I feel you, Sis! And I applaud your determination to learn Yoruba... I know what it feels like to be in the midst of people and not understand what they are saying around you. If I overcame, I am sure you will too. ❤ I came in from dreemport.
Oh, you have overcome before 😂...i too will overcome this language barrier.
