Imagine A Situation Where Education Becomes Free For All...
So far, education is playing a good role in the betterment of our countries and the people at large. Free higher education is what many people wish for especially those who really value the importance of education but cannot afford it. Education should be a fundamental right. Society as a whole benefit when there are educated people - we also demand more and expect a better standard of living.
Take for instance in Europe, education is a fundamental right for children below 18 years. If a child under 18 works and does not attend school, the parents are fined and must appear in court. The primary and secondary education of children over there is free and mandatory and even for those at the tertiary level, their fees are relatively low. However, I understand that they pay taxes but the good thing is that they also benefit from the government through education and health, etc.
For my country Nigeria, I don't see the possibility of free higher education any time soon though it's possible if we can manage our resources with a good government on the seat. This is because the country is already in a terrible recession. The government is always borrowing trillions of naira from other countries now and then thereby subjecting our economy to more danger. I wonder when we will come out of this terrible debt. Nigerians also hardly pay taxes, me in particular, I stopped paying taxes because I see no reason why I should do that when the government doesn't care about my welfare, it's all about struggling to get every single thing (survival of the fittest). You see, even with the high cost of higher education in Nigeria, we are still in a total mess as a country, so I really don't know where the government will generate the money to pay the teachers considering our situation presently. However, it would have been nice if an oil-producing country like Nigeria have all it takes to give free Education to its masses.
The Effects of making education free for All
If education is free, more students will also attend school. Society in general improves as problem-solving is dealt with better. Education benefits the economy overall.
Society and behaviors will also improve when we have the majority of educated people who applies quality knowledge to work and business.
Also, there are lots of street kids out there who wished to be in school. There are also lots of people who dropped out because of school fees, so imagine a free Education, they will be happy to get back to classes and add value to themselves. Do you also remember that some higher education students work and school at the same time to pay bills? Even when it's inconvenient for them - if education is free, students will focus more and get better grades as there is no concern about the ability to pay for fees and no stress as well.
Of course, whatever has advantages also has disadvantages. The bad side I can see from this free Education is that some people may not put more energy into learning, after all, they are not paying for it but I am sure that more people value education these days so the percentage of non-serious learners wouldn't be significant.
It will only improve the standards of teaching because the more educated and curious people are the more they demand a higher standard as they are then encouraged to do their research and will challenge the educators. This forces and encourages institutions to have higher standards for themselves. A high population is expected but the government can always make adequate plans for teachers to give in their best for a better outcome on the part of the learners.
So all in all education should be free if possible or perhaps make the fee relatively low for everyone to have easy access to it because it provides - opportunities, economic, personal, and social benefits, and overall Equality. Society as a whole will then operate on a higher level.
This is my entry to the #hivelearners community contest on the topic titled FREE HIGHER EDUCATION
Its sad to say but with capitalism and corruption this is something we wont see in many many years to come unless society make a 360 degree change, politicians and big corporation need ignorant ppl so they can stay in control thats one of the many reasons why education cost so much now days, in my country there still good "free" education when I say free its because the goverment covers everything but we still pay education taxes, one of my kids is on a governmental school because he is autist but that school is one of the best in the country, but yeah I dont see education been free again, great post, education should be a fundamental right in every part of the world 👍
Wow....that was a nice addition to my points. Good to know that you have a good government free school in ur country. Send my warm hugs to ur child ❤️
The possibility of free education is zero, I don't that happening especially in Nigeria and if it doesn't, we are going to pay some other ways for it.
It will be great for everyone to be educated and you are right about some people taking it for granted.
I don't believe the standard of education will improve at all because students will lack a lot of things which includes a proper learning environment, infrastructure, equipment and others.
It's mostly in Nigeria you can see so much lapses when things are free. I know is quite difficult to see a free Education here... even when we have the resources to relieve some fees to parents
Societies too will benefit from the free education when all individuals are educated, bringing in their knowledge to solve issues in the society. The only way it will affect the standard of teaching is when teachers aren't put into consideration or plans aren't well organized for them in the classrooms.
If they aren't paid, there's no way they would put in efforts to teaching effectively and efficiently.
Exactly...if the government are doing anything free Education, they should consider the back bone which are the teachers otherwise the result will be poor
I get your point totally Nkem but honestly, I will still say it's preferable that education isn't made free.
I would agree with the random scholarships earned by distinguishable kids but not making it free for all.
That way, the essence of educating students might be defeated... I'll share my points in my own entry though 😁
Well done ma, hope chicken dey... I dey hungry o 🥴

Sure, I get ur point as well... however you and I in Nigeria know that free Education can only happen in the dream world 🌎...we are only saying what we wish .. lol

Alright 😊😊👍
You made very important points here @nkemakonam89
Education can be free and yielding if the government are really concern with the well-being of the country but at this critical stage it's going to be difficult. That is why private schools are dominating already because money is needed to sustain a high and quality Education but Nigerian government no de see that one oo
As you said it's like a two side coin some people will take education serious but some will actually not be serious because they've not spent a dim so they feel they are not at lost...
Education can actually go a long way if it's free in a nation.. nice piece..🙏🙌
My dear, even some states where primary and secondary education is free in Nigeria, isn't quality....only private can give the quality we are looking for but with a price
It's well bro
Thank you so much for the visit 💕
The pleasure is mine 🙌🙏
Wish you a fruitful weekend 🙌🙏
My sister for me, I still prefer free Education especially we wey don born children full house. Hahaha 😄.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful post with us.
Hahaha
Free something dey sweet you like this 😂
Hmmm... Well said ma'am. This is a food for thought indeed, especially where you said you stopped paying tax because it doesn't look like it's worth it.
I thought about it and saw that it's just the sad reality of the nation we live in.
Also, indeed education should be free. I believe the serious ones who will take advantage of that opportunity will be more than the ones who will take it for granted.
Well written ma'am.
Exactly....the serious ones will be more only of this dream shall turn to reality one day
Nice having you in my blog today 🥰
As far as teachers are getting paid, I don't think the Quality of free education would affected in any way. However, we're in a country where scholarship schemes do not even exist anymore. I think the focus of the government is beyond free education. Looting, borrowing of money and bad governance is the main reason why our priorities have shifted. If we don't change and give leadership to selfless people, nothing like free education will exist in Nigeria
This is just the summary of all these argument here 😂
I rest my case ooo 😂
Thanks for the input joe👍😅
As I wrote in another post, I believe that education should be free for everyone because it is a right and everyone should be able to access it.
Unfortunately it remains true that even behind education there is politics and there are interests so we have to face situations that are not clear ... so that we can really get to free education I guess it is necessary to make many changes in the world.
Nice post!
Yea .. politics is an issue that hinder some government proposal atimes
I really hope for a good change in our world 🌍

It's going to be a dream come through. The government secondary school in lagos state is free that I know. They could start with government university, Nigerians are capable 👍 I know we can make it happen.
If there are free higher education, It would create more job opportunities for lectures and other administrative workers.
More opportunities for the youth with no future ambition to be educated. I say yes to free higher education
Wowwwww 🫢
Thank you so much flora for throwing more light on This
Nigeria can be great again

You made many great points - education being free should be a worldwide right and it should not even be a discussion. Overall the society is elevated. There will be other issued but not this one. Everyone has ability and should be allowed to persue them if that is their choice. At least until 18 years old -it should be free.
Indeed my dear
Thanks so much for your time in my blog
