Cacti that grow in trees

Although we think of deserts when we think of cacti, there are a group found mainly in tropical America that colonised the trees. Epiphytic is the name given to plants that live on trees and we usually think about orchids living in trees but looking at the flowers, these are clearly cacti family. You can grow them in cactus soil but they are happiest if you grow them in bark chips in hanging baskets. I don't have enough trees to do that so mine live on a shady windowsill outside. All of these cacti would die in my greenhouse.

Epiphyllum.jpg

Epiphyllum, aka Orchid cactus have some of the showiest flowers in various colours and there are people who collect every colour. I think I only have two different kinds, the other doesn't feel like flowering so we wait... They only flower in spring

Talking about obsessive collecting of different coloured flowers, anther hoarder's favourite: Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter cacti. They have those names in the USA or Northern hemisphere because they flower at those times. They are all also completely different species.
Hatiora gaertneri.jpg

Hatiora gaertneri aka Easter cactus flowers in spring and has similar leaves but very different flowers to the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus flower in late autumn and winter and are both Schlumbergeras but different species. Apart from the different flowering times, the Thanksgiving cactus has little points on its leaves and the Christmas cactus leaves have smooth edges. So now you finally can tell the difference!

Schlumbergera truncata aka Thanksgiving cactus is below

thanksgiving cactus.jpg

This one is Schlumbergera bridgesi aka Christmas cactus
christmas cactus.jpg

The less common tree cacti are the Rhipsalis family
and they are unusual in that they are found in both Africa and the Americas. Rhipsalis is the only cactus species native to Africa. I'll only show the ones I have that flowered. They are all similar with slender stems with short hairs. This one is Rhipsalis pilocarpa

Rhipsalis pilocarpa.jpg

This last one is called Hatiora salicornioides aka Bones Cactus and it's in the same family as the Easter cactus

Hatiora .jpg

I hope some of the others I got flower soon, I'm curious what they look like. I've never seen these little cacti make seeds, perhaps they lack pollinators. They are extremely easy to propagate though although there's one type that I simply can't get to root, it always flowers and then dies on me without rooting. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with Rhipsalis ramulosa.

Yellow ones sound interesting, I haven't seen those. Why do you graft them, are they difficult in your climate?

Si son complicadas, no avanzan casi en tierra.

Pues nada más florezcan este año te envío fotos 🙏🏻😊

I'm always surprised that Adenium grow so well in tropical climates. They can be tricky here in their native land

These flowers are great, very colorful and I like the emotion you put into this, to take care of cactus to make them bloom. I am not good with plants, sometimes I water them too much, I am learning little by little how to take care of them according to the species. Beautiful post, great photos and thanks for teaching us a little of these species of flora.

Thank you! I like cactus because you can forget to water them and they mostly don't mind

Not recently. I managed to buy a home of my own 8 years ago and I hope to only leave in a box. I'm utterly tired of moving

Oh, okay, it is nice to have your own place, and I have lost count of how many times I have moved over the years. We have the habit of living lean, as then when we move, there is less to pack and to transport. My mom used to call me a nomad. !LOL

I hope that you will be happy there and that you will grow a forest of cactii.

What did the Golden Gate bridge say to the Golden Gate river when they broke up?

Oh yeah, in my case it's also a dream to settle finally, but while I am still active, it will have to stay a distant dream, as we have still not found the ideal place. I am close to your Rep count in age, and the final place will have to wait. !LOLZ

What can I say, the cats found me my dream home. I had to fight hard to get it but it's what I want. I'm the only person I know that bought a place because of the rocks in the back yard 😁 I only thought of looking in that particular suburb because I thought it would be a place where the felines could be happy and then the listing popped up at a price I could afford

Fascinating plants! I like this squiggly-looking one, and bones cactus is an apt name.

It's other name is Drunkard's Dream, because the little segments resemble bottles 😁

I didn't realize how much I love these types of succulents...
and epiphytes in general!
When I first discovered Easter cactus I was blown away by a white 'aster like' flower. Very different from the other more closely related two. There's only one left (and it might be Hatiora sp.) in my home. I can't seem to keep it happy, so maybe now I'll just treat it even more like an orchid!

That should work, minus the humidity

Actually that reminds me I left one outdoors! I found it in discarded in a park in the summer and it has been thriving despite just being a rootball with no pot.

They do enjoy fresh air and the roots are mainly there to anchor the plant

Points or smooth edges. There you go. I am liking that bone cactus. I feel like it could be good to eat. Am I right or in trouble?

Holy cacti happiness! All of that showcasing made me so smiley, in fact I might have to go check on my Christmas cactus that I inherited from my great grandma, it's getting close to that time of year😊

Also, thanks a lot Nik, now I am going to have to find me a Bones Cactus, that thing is intriguing lol!

Hope all is well down your way, always happy to see a post from ya!

Everyone's grandma had one 😉 and it's great that they live long enough to be inherited!
The Bones cacti are fun and those buds are little yellow Christmas cactus flowers once they get going properly.

Thank you! We're surviving down South I guess, it's just helluva hot and my city has exchanged an electrical crisis for a water one. We aren't too badly impacted where I live but many places go without water for days 😡

what I'm doing wrong

well obviously with all your cacti you are doing many things right to have so many flowers 🙂
I think my favorite is the Hatiora gaertneri aka Easter cactus. The flowers are pretty and I like the way they kind of cascade down.

I'm rather partial to that one too. These guys are a little tricky for me, it's often too hot and sunny for them. Some plants also only root at particular times of the year.
Cavcti flower if they grow outside, they really need to feel the seasons

Very beautiful and amazing cactus with such red flowers. The Christmas cactus look very familiar. I used to have one a long time ago. I ought to find one!

They are common and easy to grow, you could even keep it in a tree in your country

I love all your crazy looking cacti. I like the different blooms.

I have an Easter cactus whose green body looks amazingly like the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus. I never paid attention to the differences in the blooms.

Thank you! 🌵
The Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter cacti do seem quite similar, especially if they live in an environment with less strong light, until you see them next to each other. Some of my Christmas cacti are naturally dark purple but others are reddish due to the high light levels at my place
