Review | When There Are No More Stars Left to Count [ENG-ESP]

The protagonist of this story is Maya, a young and very talented ballet dancer who has dedicated her whole life to dance. She is a girl with a bright future dancing on the most prestigious stages. She lives with her grandparents, and her grandmother has ensured that her life revolves around dance as a shared dream.

However, everything changes when Maya is in a car accident and her knee is severely damaged and she will no longer be able to dance professionally. You would think that her family would be sympathetic to her, and encourage her to continue in spite of everything? Not so. Her grandmother, a very controlling and selfish woman, blames her for everything and decides that she has to fend for herself from now on since she can't dance.

Maya has no other family support, her mother has ignored her since she was a child and she never knew her father, in addition, she finds out that her boyfriend is being unfaithful and breaks off their relationship, so, with nothing more to lose, she makes a somewhat impulsive decision and goes in search of her father, she discovers that he lives in Italy and has the illusion of creating a bond with him.

From the beginning, this story is presented to us as a search for identity. The protagonist has dedicated her whole life to dance, she doesn't know who she is and doesn't really know her origins, so (at least for me) it is exciting to accompany her in this search, while she gets rid of so many bad beliefs she had about herself and that her own family made her unworthy of so many things.

But this is not all, on the way, she meets a boy, Lucas, with whom she soon connects and they have a very nice relationship, Lucas is always there for her and encourages her to accept herself and to appreciate the little things in life, besides, he also introduces her to a lot of people who help her to grow and believe in herself. Maya has a family again.

It is the first time I read a book by Maria Martinez but I really liked her prose, it is an enjoyable read, with characters with whom you will learn lessons, they are not perfect, but precisely because of that you can identify with some of them and you will come to love them, also, one of the things that I found fantastic in this story, is its setting, it is really easy to imagine the places that are told and I was very moved with some dreamy scenes in that little Italian village where Maya lives.

For me this book is a kind of moral to believe in second chances, in being patient with ourselves, in believing in love and also in appreciating every moment that life gives us. If I could identify this book in one sentence it would be: "Every cloud has a silver lining".

Yes it is a romantic story but it is not just about one type of love, there is family love, friends love, self love, there is an evolution in each of these aspects that may move you.
