Urban Fabric: A new project and London lunchtime photos

I’m a man of projects, I’ve got many on the go at once and this photographic adventure started life on Substack, I’m still running it there but of course it earns nothing, hence I’m bringing it over here to my PeakD blog.

What’s it all about?

The intersection of things in our towns and cities. There are many layers, the effects of time and a multitude of changes create a rich tapestry of fascinating architectural history. I like to think of it as being, the “fabric” of the places I discover whilst exploring on foot with my camera/iPhone.

Which communities does this fit in?

Hmm, a few of them potentially! I’ve singled out the following

Architecture, photography lovers, monomad for some posts etc - let me know if you can think of any others, in the comments below.

Maybe this in time would make a good community?

The City of London

The series starts in London, where I often find myself once a fortnight on Tuesdays. Our office is not far away from Fenchurch, Liverpool Street and as such is right next to the financial area of the city where we have the Lloyds building, Gherkin etc. It’s an incredible place, packed with every conceivable layer of history and perfect for this project.

I’d love to gather together a series of older photos if I possibly can to compare with what’s there today, maybe in time this project will serve as a reference point for future historians!!Near Fenchurch Avenue, looking towards the Lloyds building

Leadenhall Market, one of my favourite pieces of architecture in London

The Scalpel - reflections and juxtaposition with older buildings around it

So your office must be 5 mins walk from mine as I am close to Liverpool Street and my office overlooks the Gherkin. There is a lovely mix of new and old in the City. It often amazes how they blend together so that most don't even notice.

We’ve a great view of the Gherkin and its neighbours from our office too. It’s an eclectic part of the city, as there are still just a few old blocks of flats down some of the side streets. I love the old churches and believe some go back as far as the 13th century. I’ll double check that though.

London is indeed a beautiful, amazing city! Last time I was there for the diamond jubilee 2022. 💜

The jubilee was fantastic, did you go to any of the live events?

Was there the whole weekend. Great event. Missed the big parade on Thursday though. Great she was able to be there, admire her strength and what she gave to the country. 🇬🇧👸🏻

Glad you were able to take part. We did our thing too, though stayed away from London and took part in a massive village celebration instead which was fantastic. I was very much a fan of the Queen, “old Queenie” as we liked to call her. It was a big shock when she died.
