Splinterlands, a new era?
If anybody has been paying attention to the news feed lately they will have seen another round of layoffs for the splinterlands team and a restructuring off the company, again.
It's not good news for the game and the company but it doesn't have to be the end.
This bear market is wrecking projects left, right and center. Any company that has the majority of their assets in crypto and get paid in crypto is bound to be feeling the pain after 90% drops in price and an 18 month bear. It's not just them, it's everybody.
The biggest issue here is the fact that the game saw such success just before the bear market and had scaled up to match all of the hype and inflow of users that came their way. Unfortunately they bought the top of the market and have been feeling it since.
They are as guilty as the rest of us in buying the hype and lost focus on the main objective. Creating a great game and eco-system. Instead they launched new games, vouchers, nodes, runi's, promo cards, partnerships, tv stations. Everything except gameplay it seems.
It's not any one persons fault or the team itself but it was avoidable. So were my losses in the bear market. If i had paid attention, sold all the way up and parked HBD at that time i would be sitting pretty now myself.
But I didn't.
I did however build a good base and am still here now.
Just like splinterlands.
As long as we are still in the game there is still hope.
Aggroed was a big part of building #splinterlands from day one and helped it to become the biggest game in crypto at one stage.
Unfortunately they lost focus on the most important part of the game which was the game itself and lost their way trying to do too much at once.
The bear market was the biggest factor in this scenario as everybody's funds dried up and they realizes it was too much.
Hopefully this change of leadership in the game will renew focus on gameplay, player experience and improved features to splinterlands itself instead of everything else.
It's not easy to build something like this and while mistakes were made a lot of this is trial and error. No blame, just a learning experience for everybody involved.
Rebuild and refocus.
Aggroed seems to be the big personality in this scenario. He is all about expansion and building connections. Very important in the long run.
However I'm hoping that Matt as the new person in charge will cut out the extra nonsense and just focus on the game.
Build a great game. Get the tokenomics right, finish land, brawls, spells, and everything else that we have been promised for ages. Make the game fun and the community grow again. Stop creating extra stuff to buy.
Simplify the whole eco-system and make it fun again.
Get rid of vouchers once and for all. They have been a disaster since day one. Bring out a promo card and price it entirely in vouchers never to use them again.
Finish building the parts necessary to improve the game and please keep land as simple as possible. I tried it once and was sick of it after ten minutes. It should be easier than this to farm land.
For the next pack sales price them reasonably, set a certain number and start a burn on the first day for six months until all sold or burned. Nothing for the next six months and then go again. If people buy them great, if not the pack number goes down and the cards become scarcer and more valuable.
Small things but just focus on the experience going forward. No more random items, just the necessary ones.
I'm not selling up anything but i think that another card set will be a hard sell in this market. I hope that we are still here for the next bull market and that we make it in good condition.
Splinterlands is still the best web3 game out there, it just needs to get the priorities right now and survive the next few months.
Try for yourself.
If you haven't played the game before then now is the best time to join. Today is much better than tomorrow and a lot better than later.

Man, I've been saying this was avoidable since before it happened and it just looked like they were about to make decisions that I thought would bring us here. Still I stupidly didn't sell because I wanted to believe Aggy would figure out his mistakes and stop doubling down on them.
That said, I have no problem pinning the blame on one person. The person who bet the company on a rally being just around the corner over and over again until we were flooded with assets, strange projects, and nothing had any direction. And now that person is out of the man position of power and we can get back to building a game and economy instead of fomo and presales for random crap just to keep the bet alive for just a few more months.
Matt is coming out saying (almost) all the things I've been saying for 2+ years. He's still missing a few points but overall I'm excited again. I just hope we bottom soon. It's getting hard to watch the value of everything hit new lows every single day. Of course with rebellion coming, its unlikely we're at the bottom. No one is bringing new money in here so that means old assets will sell off so Rebellion can be bought.
