The Power of Spoken Truth: Speaking Up for What Matters

avatar

Hello guys,
Happy weekend, I hope you’re doing well. It feels like I’ve been away forever. Life has been very demanding these past few days I barely have time for myself. Today I happen to be up late so I decided to use this time to write since I’ve been away for sometime now. That’s a story for another day.

Today, I want to share my thoughts on the first topic for the weeks HiveGhana engagement contest.

Life hasn’t really been a bed of roses for me especially for the last few years. Most of my friends see me to be in a good place but I always tell them it’s by God’s grace.

As kids, I’m sure we all fantasised about what we would be or do when we grow up and we would daydream about all the good things that could happen to us in the future. But when life hits us, we realise life doesn’t always go as planned. We plan and God plans and He is the best of planners.

Most at times life throws challenges at us and it is up to us to work to overcome these challenges. Such challenges can come in different forms and this leads us to my favourite quote by Martin Luther King Jr - "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

This isn’t just a quote , for most people this is their reality. In todays world, not being able to speak up for yourself can go a long way to diminish your self worth. In a world where even little kids are taught to speak up for themselves, not being able to speak for yourself especially as an adult is a huge disadvantage.

This quote teaches us the significance of speaking up and taking action when it comes to matters that mean a lot and are of importance to us. Remaining silent in the face of injustice and important issues indirectly means defeat. Silence means a lot and this is why it is very crucial that we stand up for ourselves and others and make our voices heard. That’s the only way to achieve the change and progress we so much desire.

I have found myself in situations where I thought that there was nothing I could do or say so I just remained silent through it all. Later on, it came to my realisation that what if I had done or said something to make my voice heard. Maybe and just maybe things wouldn’t be how they were at that point in time. From then on, I made a promise to myself to always stand up for what is right and speak up for myself rather than coiling back into my shell anytime I’m faced with challenges. Some people take silence for weakness and they would make sure to take advantage of everything second and minute you keep on remaining silent.

Sometimes it might look like all hope is lost but I assure you, speaking up for yourself also for others might look like nothing in that instance but in the future you will look back and realise that act changed a whole lot for you and you would not ever regret for a single moment speaking up for yourself ever again.

Living a morally fulfilling life means we must be willing to voice our concerns and put in the work to achieve a positive impact at the end of the day. You own your life so learn to stand up for yourself in all things that has to do with you.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, thank you for your time.

Keeping quiet has cost me more than I could Imagine. If you don't speak for yourself, nobody will do that for you
