Self-Medication: A Risky Business

If there’s something Africans are known for, it’s self medication. Growing up, my grandpa used to always give all the kids in the house herbal medicine every night. We always tried to run away from it but guess what? You’ll be caught and the drug will be forced down your throat. You can imagine how that felt.😂

First off, let me start with paracetamol. Did you know you can loose your life when you take paracetamol without it behind prescribed by a healthcare professional. If someone told me this four years ago, I wouldn’t believe it but thanks to my four years of studying biochemistry. Para is one of the most abused drugs in the African space and it’s also the cause of many deaths but we do not even realize it.

As a biochemist, there’s so much I’ve come to learn. It’s been a tough journey, but the things you get to learn is more than you can imagine. Learning the mechanisms of actions of drugs, drug action, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and a whole lot has actually taught me that in as much as drugs are supposed to serve a good purpose for you, when taken wrongly they will most definitely be detrimental to your health.

Regardless of all the things that I know, I still sometimes self medicate because I know enough to know what’s wrong with me. But there’s always that one situation where things get out of hand. Today, I want to share my worst experience with self medication with you all. Sometime ago, I came down with severe headache for about a whole week. It felt like my head was literally going to fall off because even when I wake up at midnight me head aches.

Out of desperation, I went to the pharmacy and bought a painkiller, specifically Gebedol. This drug is know to work very fast and that’s why I opted for that. The drug had ten tablets and normally the prescription is one to two tablets per dosage. Guys, I literally took the who 10 tables by the end of the day. I just kept taking two tablets every two hours until the pack was empty and guess what, my headache got worse. I was so dizzy I couldn’t even stand on my feet and I eventually just blacked out.

source

I woke up the next day and knew I had overdosed but at least I wasn’t dead. I just carried myself to the clinic to get myself in shape. My parents got so worried because they had already advised me on painkillers and I didn’t listen. That was the last I ever took gebedol in my life and I hope to keep it that way. Sometimes you don’t even need drugs for some of these things, you just need enough rest and the headache is gone.

Drugs are important to us as humans but let’s make sure to take them in the right proportion and with the right description. I hope this helps someone out there.

I have this philosophy of life when it comes to medication. I only take them as a last resort. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with this headache medication and I'm glad you didn't have any major problems.

Most people just take drugs because they feel it’s more convenient.

I didn’t have any major complications but I still have the headaches sometimes.
Thanks for passing by.

Wow, the truth is that I think you were very lucky in not resulting in more damage, I am glad for that and that you have learned that things in excess are not good, and that it is important on certain occasions to follow the recommendations of the specialists who are the ones who can tell you which is appropriate to not. Also remembering that each body is different, and that you have to undergo tests to know what is appropriate to prescribe for each person.

Your publication is very instructive!

Well scripted.
It shouldn't be always about drugs. The human body can heal naturally if we stick to some indices like eating natural foods and having enough rest as stated.
I have also learned that every medications has a side effect to the common paracetamol.

But then, you have strong conscience to finish the entire packet. I could never. Ehn? Thank God nothing too serious happened with the OD. Who would teach me coagulation cadences?

God really saved you, to much of overdoses can lead to death. Also you are right about paracetamol, people doesn't know that too much of paracetamol can cause death and not all what's happening to our health need paracetamol, we just need to find the actual drug for what's wrong with our health.

I think people need to be educated on the effects of self medication because most of we black people will do whatever we want regardless.😂
