Rooting for the Villain and a Tiny Plot Flaw in The Day of the Jackal (2024)
The Day of the Jackal (2024) was really great! Surely one of the top 5 releases of 2024.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and was impressed by everything. The plot, acting, setting, everything! They were superb.
Rooting for the Villain
This series really has me impressed by how seeing things from a person's perspective can really sway us, because I found myself rooting for the villain.
The Jackal is the major hero of the story and because he does a lot of evil he's supposed to be viewed as an antihero, in literary terms, but guys this dude did too much, I think he has earned the title of the villain.
But we still loved him, didn't we? We rooted for him all the way through, didn't? Evil as he is 🤣.
This is all because we were seeing the movie mostly through his perspective and he was properly established as the hero. When you see things through a person's it's so difficult to hate them for their choices no matter how bad.
We saw this guy kill a man he dated in order to get access to an auditorium. We saw him kill an old couple who decided to place a bet on humanity and drive him to the hospital. We saw him murder in cold blood so many people who were just trying to do their jobs.
But we loved him and wished him success in all his endeavors, like a job application rejection letter 🤣.
The biggest target he killed was a billionaire trying to launch a selfless software that would help the world in a great many ways and affect the illegal wealth of billionaires. This is something we'd love to see in real life, but..
But we hoped with all our hearts that this guy would succeed in killing this one selfless billionaire, because we didn't want to see this guy fail. We wanted only good things to happen to him. LOL.
This really baffled me, even half way into the movie when suspense had my heart was pounding because I was scared something was going to happen to this guy. I stopped to ask myself why I was rooting so hard for this guy when he's the bad guy.
I decided I was wrong for rooting for him, but after a few more moments of watching I was back rooting harder than life for him.
It's difficult to help it when you view something from a person's perspective.
Also, Eddie Redmayne was great at this role, he's charming, he captures your heart, and makes you feel like he's a good guy who is just trying to get by.
This is the second factor, when you see something from a sweet looking person's perspective it's even more dangerous. Lol.
Tiny Plot Flaw
I'm very good at spotting plot flaws in movies and stories (if I do say so myself 😃😃), but I couldn't spot any in this movie, that was some really great tight knitted plot. But there was one small thing.
At the end of the movie when Isabel, the MI6 boss told Osi that Bianca and her partner went to Spain on their own accord, that they were not sent or sanctioned by the agency. That was a small plot flaw.
Because she was lying about not sanctioning the move, this lie can be dangerous for her if she is discovered. If she's discovered she'll be viewed as a traitor by her colleagues in the agency. And it was so easy for her to be discovered because Bianca's family knew Isabel was the one who sanctioned it.
They saw Isabel come to their house, and Bianca told them what it was about and they debated about whether she should go or not.
Knowing that her family saw her come to sanction the move should have made her not to lie about not sanctioning it because she can be easily discovered, they family saw her!
A lose end like this is not expected from an intelligence boss, and it wasn't even important that she lied because what could be the problem with letting Bianca follow that lead? If she accepted that she gave Bianca the go-ahead how bad could that be?
The job is all about dangerous missions like that, it wasn't the first one, they knew they could die at any of those missions, so why was Isabel so bent on lying about not sanctioning it, risking the fact that her family knows she sanctioned it?
Very little flaw, though, that only came at the very end, so it didn't affect the story significantly. They did a terrific job with this movie.

It's a fantastic show indeed ! I really didn't think Bianca will go down that early . I really can't wait for what unfolds in season 2. The Jackal is coming for them all ..
