The saying "assumption is the mother of all mistakes" is the polite form of a certain saying. Your story epitomises what can go wrong when one assumes then takes action based on conjecture. When there is a lack of communication - things are bound to go worng. Unfortunately for Oma, Michael did not forgive her - it was too late indeed - so no happy ending.
