Let's remember that in the first movie (in 2009), we are introduced to an Esther who had a chaotic and sad past, that's why she is put up for adoption and, well, we already know how it all ended. This time we are presented with the story of Leena and how she would be her first murder; so says the title and so they sell it to us, but nothing to do with it, this psychopath already had several "trophies" and hence her fame in the asylum where she was confined, which seemed to me a total failure when it came to give the title to this film. Another mistake was that, as such, we are not told Leena's story, we are only told briefly (and very quickly because of the events that were happening at the time) about her strange illness and mental problems (and we had already been told that in the first part). Still I continued to watch it and, oh, what surprises there are in the whole plot, a total twist to her development as Esther, to see her become the lion hunted by a "calm" gazelle was amazing. I'll try not to tell too many details because of how fresh it is and perhaps many have not seen it.

Recordemos que en la primera película (en el 2009), nos presentan a una Esther que tuvo un pasado caótico y triste, por eso es puesta en adopción y, bueno, ya sabemos cómo acabó todo. En esta ocasión nos presentan la historia sobre Leena y cómo sería su primer asesinato; así lo dice el título y así nos lo venden, pero nada que ver, ya esta psicópata tenía varios “trofeos” encima y de ahí su fama en el asilo donde era recluida, cosa que me pareció un total fallo a la hora de colocarle el título a este film. Otro error fue que, como tal, no nos cuentan la historia de Leena, solo nos dicen someramente (y muy rápido por los eventos que estaban ocurriendo en ese momento) su extraña enfermedad y problemas mentales (y eso ya nos lo habían dicho en la primera parte). Aun así continué viéndola y, ¡oh, que sorpresas hay en toda la trama!, un giro totalmente a su desarrollo como Esther, verla convertida en el león cazado por una “tranquila” gacela fue asombroso. Trataré de no contar muchos detalles por lo fresco que está y quizás muchos no la hayan visto.

As I told you, it's about Leena, her escape from the asylum and how she creates a life for herself by taking the identity of Esther, a missing girl for 4 years; but all this changes when, of course and as always, "her mother" sees incongruities in her behavior and takes matters into her own hands.

Como ya les dije, se trata de Leena, su escape del asilo y cómo se crea una vida tomando la identidad de Esther, una niña perdida desde hace 4 años; pero todo esto cambia cuando, por supuesto y como siempre, “su madre” ve incongruencias en su comportamiento y toma el asunto en sus propias manos.

Compared to the first one, here Esther is polishing her manipulative wood, in fact, we can see her in many occasions careless, distracted and, of course, she still doesn't have the expertise with which she captivated in the first presentation. Even so, we can see how she herself mentalizes and prepares herself to be able to act well and pass for the perfect little daughter, and this she achieves with the help of "her mother" ironically. Knowing every detail, family memories and even acting out emotions, she learned everything in order to survive another day with her new family.

En comparación con la primera, aquí Esther va puliendo su madera de manipuladora, de hecho, la podemos ver en muchas ocasiones descuidada, distraída y, claro, aún no tiene la pericia con la que cautivó en la primera presentación. Aun así, se ve como ella misma se mentaliza y prepara para poder actuar bien y pasar por la hijita perfecta, y esto lo logra con ayuda de “su madre” irónicamente. Conocer cada detalle, recuerdos familiares y hasta actuar emociones, todo lo aprendió con tal de sobrevivir un día más con su nueva familia.

The film not only shows us this early facet of Esther, but also the emotional and psychological damage that can be done to a family by the loss of a daughter, the same damage that also seduces a psychopathy in order to keep things perfect, as everyone believes. The emotional and sexual state of mind that the father recovers, the mother happy to be taken into account affectively and as a woman, and the son who tries to stand out even with the return of his sister... in short, all this happens so that daddy is happy. Even the "most perfect" family has dark secrets to hide.

El film no solo nos enseña esta temprana faceta de Esther, sino también el daño emocional y psicológico que puede haber en una familia por la pérdida de una hija, mismo daño que seduce también a una psicopatía con tal de seguir llevando las cosas perfectas, como todos creen. El estado anímico y sexual que recupera el padre, la madre feliz por ser tomada en cuenta afectivamente y como mujer, y el hijo que intenta sobresalir aun con la llegada de vuelta de su hermana… en fin, todo un parapeto armado y todo esto ocurre para que papi esté feliz. Y es que hasta la familia “más perfecta”, tiene oscuros secretos que ocultar.

From what little I saw at the time of looking for the release date, I saw that this film did not have the same receptivity of the first one. I don't know if it was by the same director and screenwriter, but personally, I think it was an amazing show even with the details I mentioned about the name. The narrative seeks to show us a clear before-after of the character, and if for that she had to act more carelessly, I applaud it; and more considering that the performance is done by the same actress of the first film. So it's not that she acted badly or lacked something, it's to be expected because we see the ongoing transformation of a maniacal and psychopathic character. The sum of all those experiences, was what led Esther to be what we saw in the first installment, a complete unhinged, without emotions or respect for anything or anyone, except, of course, her daddy. To say that one was better than the other, to me is kind of silly, for the same reason; both had good as well as bad things and even so it doesn't stop being good psychological horror. So if you ask me, find your blanket, turn off the lights, snuggle up, and as I always tell you: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have, see it again, you can't miss it".

Por lo poco que vi al momento de buscar la fecha de estreno, vi que este film no tuvo la misma receptividad de la primera. Desconozco si fue del mismo director y guionista, pero personalmente, creo que fue una muestra asombrosa aun con los detalles que les mencioné sobre el nombre. La narrativa busca mostrarnos un claro antes-después del personaje, y si para eso tuvo que actuar con mayor descuido, lo aplaudo; y más teniendo en cuenta que la actuación la realiza la misma actriz de la primera película. Así que no es que haya actuado mal o le faltó algo, es de esperarse porque vemos la transformación en marcha de un personaje maniático y psicópata. La suma de todas esas experiencias, fue lo que llevó a Esther ser lo que vimos en la primera entrega, una completa desquiciada, sin emociones ni respeto por nada ni nadie, a excepción, por supuesto, de su papi. Decir que una fue mejor que la otra, para mí es algo tonto, por lo mismo; ambas tuvieron cosas buenas como malas y aun así no deja de ser buen terror psicológico. Así que si me preguntan, busquen su cobijita, apaguen las luces, acurrúquense, y como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
