Dendrobium is a genus of orchids that are mostly epiphytes and lithophytes in the Orchidaceae family. This is a very large genus, which contains more than 1,800 species found in various habitats in most of southern, eastern and southeastern Asia, including China, Japan, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Guinea, Vietnam and many islands in the Pacific.

Orchids in this genus have roots that creep on the surface of trees or rocks, rarely have roots in the ground. Up to six leaves develop in tufts at the end of the shoot and from one to a large number of flowers are arranged along the unbranched flowering stems. Several attempts have been made to separate Dendrobium into smaller genera, but most have not been accepted by the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families.

Dendrobium species are mostly epiphytes, or lithophytes although some species are terrestrial. They are sympodial herbs with cylindrical roots that usually appear from the base of pseudo tubers. The pseudo tuber, if any, is hard, sometimes like a stick, cylindrical or conical and more or less covered with the base of the leaf. There are one to many leaves arranged in two rows, the shape of the leaves varies from linear to oval, sometimes cylindrical but never grooved or grooved. They are usually much longer than wide and only last for one season.
