Memoir Monday: What simple pleasures of life do you truly enjoy?

Jorge Luis Borges used to say that we are made of time, but nowadays most of that time is used to work and sleep, and very little time is used to do the things we really like. That is to say, there is a lack of time for things that are not productive and that do not generate "quantified value" to our existence.

For some time now I have greatly appreciated the words of Dr. Marián Rojas Estapé who speaks of the "power of doing nothing". In terms of success and competitiveness, a person who works 24 hours a day without a break, who does a thousand things, who does not waste time on unproductive tasks, is considered productive. But Dr. Rojas Estapé suggests just the opposite: how doing simple, gratifying things, such as resting, can be more beneficial for man and his brain.

One of my great pleasures that can reset my life is drinking coffee when I wake up. Very early in the morning, after waking up and after drinking two glasses of water with lemon and baking soda, I drink my big cup of coffee. I try that this moment is not full of noises, that the smell invades my sense of smell, my mouth. After the second cup of coffee, I have the certainty that I am a better person and that I can fight against the world. Without my coffee I am a woman submerged in a dark cloud with a bad temper.

Another thing I love to do is go to the beach. My childhood, youth and adulthood have been built around that sea that frightens me, but that I have learned to love as if it were a member of my family. In fact, when I spend time without going to the sea, I miss it. It is a familiar, cultural, ancestral need. They say that just as mermaids attracted sailors, those who were born near the sea are attracted by the noise the waves make when they touch the sand.

n this small list of pleasures I must note that I like to drink a cold beer and if it is with friends and by the sea, I will be jumping for joy. I must admit that I discovered this pleasure late, when I was about 25 years old, but it is at the top of the list. As you will see: "It's never too late to be happy".

Then there is reading. I don't know if it was because I liked to read that I chose my profession, or if it was my profession that made me love books. I like to read everything, any literary genre: poetry, narrative, essays. My house is full of books and when I had an office, it was also full of books. I like to talk about the things I have read and am reading. I am one of those who gets excited and can stop sleeping, eating, just for reading. I am also one of those people that when I like a book, I give it as a gift to everyone. Hahahaha.

I also enjoy writing by hand, modeling the letters as I write, seeing how my handwriting invades the blank page. I enjoy drawing, it relaxes me because I am not an artist: I am a woman who lets her inner child doodle. Listening to music soothes my soul: it's as if I need music to turn down the volume of the noises inside me. I also love to talk with my family. I like to get together at home with my mother and sisters, catching up on things they are doing and how they are feeling.

In short, I think those personal things that bring us pleasure are what rescue us from the overcrowding that societies suffer from today. A person who values spending time with friends, who takes the time to breathe and watch a sunset, walk barefoot on the beach, is a person who breaks out of the matrix, who doesn't fit in.

These "unproductive" pleasures are a fundamental part of any human being's life and also a way to endure so much reality together. In the end it is a way to save oneself.

This is my participation this week for our great friend @ericvancewalton's initiative: Memoir monday. If you want to participate, here's the link to the invitation post.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Until a future reading, friends

A wonderful list of small pleasures! It's funny, if I find a book that really changes my life I gift it to those close to me too. Have you read The Creative Act yet? Also, what's your favorite beer?

No I haven't read that book yet, but I'm going to look for it. And as for beer, Venezuela produces good beers. There are some craft beers that are very good, but my favorite are the negritas Polar. I think every self-respecting Venezuelan carries La Polarcita Negrita in his soul.
Thank you for this initiative. If you only knew how much I enjoy writing these posts. A big hug, Eric.
Ah, we have some beers by the sea pending. Take care of yourself

I think you'd really appreciate the book. I don't think I've ever tried a Venezuelan beer! You're welcome, I'm glad people are getting so much out of it, I know I'm looking forward to it every week. Beers by the sea sound wonderful! Have a wonderful week Nancy.

Truly, a pleasant life inventory, which I share in almost everything. You made me remember an old song (from the early 70's), which was almost an anthem then: "Sweet is to do nothing" ("Dulce es no hacer nada") by The Sun Lovers (
