The Ponderosa lemon (Citrus x pyriformis) is a large, unusual hybrid citrus fruit that resembles a lemon in flavor but is much larger and bumpier. It is thought to be a cross between a lemon (Citrus limon) and a citron (Citrus medica). Ponderosa lemons are much larger than regular lemons, often weighing up to 2–5 pounds. They have thick, bumpy, and wrinkled rinds that turn bright yellow when ripe.
The juice is very similar to a lemon—tart and acidic—but the fruit contains more seeds and less juice compared to standard lemons.
The Ponderosa lemon tree is small to medium-sized, making it suitable for container growing. It has dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. It thrives in warm, subtropical climates but can be grown indoors in cooler regions. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Requires full sun for optimal growth. Needs consistent moisture but should not be waterlogged. While not a commercial variety, its juice and zest can be used like regular lemons in recipe. Due to its attractive appearance and fragrant blossoms, it is often grown as an ornamental plant.
