A dragonfly is an agile and fascinating insect belonging to the order Odonata and the suborder Anisoptera. Known for their vibrant colors, large multifaceted eyes, and long, slender bodies, dragonflies are commonly found near water sources like ponds, lakes, and rivers. Dragonflies have two pairs of wings that work independently, allowing for exceptional maneuverability in flight. They can hover, glide, and even fly backward. Their large compound eyes provide nearly 360-degree vision, making them excellent hunters. Dragonflies are carnivorous and primarily feed on small insects like mosquitoes, flies, and midges, which they catch mid-air. Nymphs (aquatic stage) live in water and are predators. Adults emerge after molting, leaving their exoskeleton behind. They are important predators in controlling insect populations and serve as indicators of ecosystem health.
