Importance of Work Life Balance

If we are working for someone then we spend maximum time of our day at our work place. I remember my corporate days when I would spend a minimum of 10 hours a day in office. I would reach office by 9 and never leave before 7 or even later, by the time I would reach home I would be so exhausted that I would only have my meals and spend some time with my Son and that was it, the day would end there. I would feel frustrated many times for not being able to give time to my family and for myself. Not all the years that I spent working I worked in this fashion, but there was a phase. And I realized that I was too bogged down and never be happy.

I decided to quit that job. When I landed up in a new job from day 1, I had decided that I will have a work life balance, and made it a point to leave office as per the timings. Many times, my co-workers would taunt me, that I am leaving early, and I would in return tell them that I come on time and leave on time and work as per the timings that Company has set for me. The problem with them was that they would come in late and sit in office till late, and that would make it look like they worked more. Whereas I maintained my timing as per the office guidelines. The fact was that me and them worked same hours. I could really feel the difference in myself when I started setting this discipline in place. My mental health got better with time. I was able to do other things in life and spend some more time with family.
I realized that when I put my foot down no one could force me, because I was just going by their rule book.

This advice I give to all the people in their jobs, especially the younger generation. They feel that if they spend more time at work, they will get promoted faster than their colleagues. That's not true, during the time of promotion evaluation, your work will be monitored and not that how late you sit in office. I experienced it myself in the job where I worked extra-long hours. There was barely any appreciation. Seniors took it for granted and dumped more work. But in the job where I set those boundaries, I got promoted faster and was appreciated more often.

For my team, I always made it a point that they would come and leave on time and late sitting was never an evaluation criteria. In the pursuit of climbing the corporate ladder fast some people dedicate 100% of their time to their jobs but trust me being an HR I know that a Company will never look at that if there is ever a hard decision to be taken.

Have a good balance between work life and home life will boost mental health also. Again, from my own experience I will say that an employee performs much better when they maintain a good healthy work life balance against the one who is always seen in office. With this I do not say that one must never do over time at work, if needed once in a way, one should not be rigid on that part then and leave the work unfinished, but it should not be a daily practice.

One must work smart and hard and just not balance on one side.

Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸

I agree - the most important thing is the balance between everything. Even work and life.

Having a good balance between private life and work is important. However, sometimes the scales must tip more on the side of work in certain situations. In a family like mine where I am unfortunately the only one who manages to bring home some money, there is little I can do. I have to work as hard as I can until the situation improves.

I do understand this situation also but as you mentioned you will do it till your situation improves and more importantly you are doing it because you have some helpless situation in your life, which is so much justified. It is never so easy to just draw lines on these things, but it is better to be mindful and do it in a way that best favors us and brings good results in every way.

Very well said Naina ji.

There is another aspect. Office Bosses always want max out of you and they always keep you on pressure, they want you to spend more time in office. They never think that an employee can put their best when their mind is fresh and free of stretch. In that case, an employee thinks when working hour ends and they can go home. In this situation both the company and the individual suffer. People keep changing their jobs.

Balancing office work is very difficult. In maximum case a poor man's life becomes just going to office and coming back home.
Life becomes dull, monotonous and stressful and finally getting aged soon.

This is a habit that some of the bosses have that if they put pressure, then more work will happen and sometimes they just do it mindlessly without thinking the practical side of it. As you say very rightly if your mind will be free then productivity will also be good.

The annoying part is when the pay doesn't make up with the energy and time you give in. I remember working as a teacher in a nursery school many years ago. Our employer will keep us from morning till late in the evening and will still hold back the meagre amount of money that he used to pay us. Like you have said, one should not devote all his time to work. It's a lesson I have learnt. Thank you.

It is the most frustrating part when the pay and other benefits and even the position you hold is not in line with the efforts that we put. Some of these employers have a mentality that if they have hired you for a job it means they literally owe you, at the same time it is the individual's responsibility to not go over board and become the pawn at their hands.
